CA - Saturday, civil rights activists called for a formal apology and a hate crime investigation into why racially insensitive and incorrect names of members of the Black Student Union (BSU) got into a high school yearbook. A student on the yearbook staff at Charter Oak High School placed fake names, including "Tay Tay Shaniqua," and "Crisphy Nanos" next to a picture of BSU members in the yearbook.

School Board President Joseph Probst said he didn't know the gender or race of the student who changed the names, but he did know the student will be a senior next year. He also said "appropriate actions will be taken."

The students whose names were changed were given stickers with the correct names to be placed over the error in their books. "What else can you do?" asked Probst. "It would be nice to snap a magic finger, but I think it was incredibly well done."

Jordan Smith, a BSU member and a senior, said she wants the yearbook recalled and reprinted.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable demanded Saturday that Probst "formally apologize to parents and students" and threatened a parent and student protest at an upcoming school board meeting if no action is taken.
