MORRISANIA, Bronx - A suspect was arraigned Wednesday in the Bronx, New York City shooting of a 5-year-old boy on his birthday.

Investigators said 27-year-old Michael Quiles fired several rounds on a Morrisania street around 5 p.m. Monday, hitting Jaheem Hunter in the head with a stray bullet. Quiles is now behind bars, charged with attempted murder. More charges could be pending.
WABC-TV reports, Hunter had just finished visiting his father and was being walked to a waiting car at the time. As the child fell to the pavement, witnesses said Quiles turned to them and said, "Sorry, my bad" before fleeing the scene.

Hunter remains in critical condition at New York Presbyterian Hospital, rushed there by his father who did not wait for an ambulance.

A vigil was held outside the hospital Tuesday, as people offered their prayers and tears for the victim.

"Every day he gets better and better," City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson said. "It is extremely unfortunate and deeply sad that he was gunned down on his fifth birthday. Where does that happen? To be shot on your birthday? It is horrifying."

Bronx boy, 5, shot in head on birthday slowly recovering

Nearly four weeks after a stray bullet struck his head on his fifth birthday, Jaheem Hunter is making small strides in his fragile recovery.

The brave Bronx boy moved the left side of his body last week as doctors eased him out of a medically-induced coma at New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital.

But Jaheem’s relatives aren’t celebrating yet. His prognosis remains unknown.

“It’s definitely great news that he’s making progress,” Aja Holmes, Jaheem’s sister and guardian, told the Daily News. “It’s also scary because you don’t know. You wonder if he’s going to be the Jaheem that you know and love. Or if it’s a Jaheem that we just have to know and love because he’s going to be different.”

Jaheem Hunter has taken his first steps — marking a giant leap forward in the boy’s miraculous recovery from a stray bullet to the head on his fifth birthday.

Nearly three months after the Bronx shooting, Jaheem is learning to walk again. He’s also started speaking, eating normally and moving both sides of his body.
“He’s a miracle kid,” said his sister and guardian, Aja Holmes, 35. “He’s progressing so well, and all he’s complaining about is he wants to go home. I’m so proud of him.”

Jaheem’s recovery is all the more remarkable given that he was barely responding to commands just a month and a half ago. At the time, his family worried that brain trauma might leave him mute and mostly incapacitated.

He’s still uttering just a few words at a time.

But now that Jaheem is munching on Cheez Doodles and spelling out his name, Holmes is starting to believe he may experience a full recovery.

“Cognitively, he’s there,” she said. “It’s the fine motor skills we’re going to have to work on.”

Jaheem spent several weeks in a medically induced coma, breathing with the help of a ventilator, following the June 5 shooting.

A 5-year-old boy who returned home just before Christmas after miraculously recovering from a gunshot wound to the head was rushed to a hospital on Saturday.

Little Jaheem Hunter suffered stroke-like symptoms and was taken to the intensive care unit at New York Presbyterian Hospital Columbia, his family said.

Jaheem’s sister and guardian, Aja Holmes, told the Daily News that doctors were monitoring his condition and trying to determine whether he needed surgery to alleviate fluid on his brain or if antibiotics could heal him...

...Doctors are reluctant to perform surgery, Holmes said. Jaheem has already endured several operations since a bullet pierced his skull on June 5.

“If they open his head up again, it will definitely mean more surgeries in the future,” Holmes said.

He returned to Holmes’ Yonkers home two weeks ago, after spending five months recuperating from his injuries and learning to speak, walk and write again.

Holmes said she was frustrated Jaheem was back in the hospital and “he has to go through this after everything we’ve been through.”

“He was doing so well,” she said.

A 5-year-old boy spent several weeks in a medically induced coma, breathing through a ventilator, after he was shot in the head in the Bronx.

Michael Quiles, the man who shot Jaheem Hunter on June 5, 2017, was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said. He was found guilty of weapon possession.

“The young victim miraculously survived a gunshot to the head but continues to struggle with the injuries,” Clark said. “An innocent child’s life has been utterly changed.”

What a bullshit sentence. This boys life is changed and this piece of shit will be out in ten years to be the same exact piece of shit he is now.
