A substitute teacher has been arrested after he slammed a textbook and kicked a chair injuring a student at Shirley Johnson-Gretna Park Elementary School on Tuesday. Chad Million, 39, of 1957 Faith Place, Terrytown, was booked with second-degree battery and cruelty to a juvenile after a classroom tantrum that may have injured two students.

He has since been released from custody.

According to the arrest register from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, Million became irate while teaching a third-grade class and slammed a book on a desk and then kicked over a desk and chair. The chair struck the back of a child, the report said.

A school administrator heard the ruckus and went into the classroom to check on Million. She told deputies that she saw him standing over a child in an aggressive manner and told him to stop, the report said. Million allegedly told the administrator that this was a tactic he was using to establish control over the children.

A child, who reported a hand injury, suffered a dislocated finger, according to the report. It was not clear from the report if that child was also struck in the back with the chair.

A Jefferson Parish school system spokeswoman said that Million does not work for the district, but is employed by Kelly Educational Services, which handles substitute staffing for the schools. It was not known how long he had been substitute teaching or his status with Kelly
