Some police officers in Tempe, Ariz., say they were asked to leave a Starbucks coffee shop on the Fourth of July because a customer complained they “did not feel safe” with the cops present, according to reports.

Five officers were drinking coffee at the Starbucks location prior to their shift beginning when a barista asked them to move out of the complaining customer’s line of sight or else leave, the Tempe Officers Association wrote in a series of Twitter messages.

Rob Ferraro, president of the police union, told FOX 10 of Phoenix that such treatment of police officers seems to be happening more often these days.

“It’s become accepted to not trust or to see police and think that we’re not here to serve you, and again, it goes back to -- we take great pride of the level of customer service we provide to citizens, and to be looked at as feeling unsafe when you have law enforcement around you is somewhat perplexing to me," Ferraro told the station in a phone interview.

The police union also posted a series of Twitter messages about the incident.

“This treatment of public safety workers could not be more disheartening,” the union wrote. “While the barista was polite, making such a request at all was offensive. Unfortunately, such treatment has become all too common in 2019.”

The union said it did not blame the Starbucks corporate office, adding it looked forward “to working collaboratively with them on this important dialogue.”

Earlier Friday, the union tweeted a parody of the Starbucks logo, with the words “Dump Starbucks” and the image of a hand dumping the contents of a cup of coffee.

A Starbucks spokesman told the Arizona Republic the company was still gathering details about what happened.

"We have a deep respect for the Tempe Police and their service to the community," spokesman Reggie Borges told the newspaper. "We've reached out to the Tempe Police Department and Tempe Officers Association to better understand what happened and apologize. We want everyone in our stores to feel welcomed and the incident described is not indicative of what we want any of our customers to feel in our stores.”

Neither the barista nor the customer who allegedly complained were identified. Starbucks would not say whether the barista would be disciplined in connection with the case.

I don't ever go to Starbucks.
I'll just add this to the list of reasons why.

Food for thought

Anyone that doesn't feel safe in LE presence are not usually law abiding citizens. All the more reason for the barista to want the police there.

When I worked nights, I used to stop in for coffee at a gas station just off the 101 freeway in southern California.
The coffee was free for anyone in law enforcement. They liked uniformed officers popping in, it made them feel safer and kept the riffraff away.

When I worked at a Dollar General, that was in the middle of nowhere, the closest place open was an Ingle's grocery store that was quarter mile across the street, the parking lot and highway between us. An officer named Rick would come at 8:30 every evening and stay in the store until I closed it down and then would sit in the parking lot until I left. I definitely felt safer with him there. If someone had robbed the place that late at night, we might not have been found until morning. Yeah I like cops.

Starbucks closed down nationwide for one day last year to give all their employees a full day of training on how to NOT discriminate. I guess it didn't help.

They should not be kicking out African Americans, cops, or anyone else based solely on who they are. Idiots.

My friend likes Dunkin Donut's iced coffee because it's the only place she can get it made correctly with decaf. It's been in the local paper that at some point in the next who knows how long we're gonna get a Dunkin Donuts, but I don't believe them, they turned down a Chic Filet because we need the green space more. Just so you know, the whole county is not much more than a cow pasture so I don't see how turning down a Chic Filet is gonna help us. I don't even like Chic Filet and I'm pissed about that.

It was only racial bias training. Clearly they need another day for police bias training, then another day for trans bias training, and a day for [insert your bias] training..
There were some videos of the sensitivity training day made by employees and it sounded like it was aimed at children. There were even pictures to color in.

If I'd been there, I would've walked out with them. There's no way I would've sat there after that. Absolutely no way to spin it into anything beneficial at all. I never understand these people who are cop haters just because not all cops excel at their job. If we turned that around and applied the same standard to business owners and employees, they would all be out of business.

I'm sorry sir/ma'am that you feel afraid, but at this moment in time they have done nothing wrong. So I cannot ask them to leave, you have the freedom to stay or leave, whatever makes you feel better.

Imagine that you were sitting at your table, enjoying your coffee, chatting to your friend, how would you feel if you were asked to leave for no apparent reason? Would you be upset?

That is what should have been said to the complainer, not immediately asking the cops to leave,

How the hell can you feel sorry for the stupid fucken idiot, I don’t even feel sorry for his loser parents they made him that way, fuck them all, fuck Starbucks
Because I picture some 16 year old confronted with a situation beyond what I would have expected a 16 year old to deal with. When I owned my tanning salon ages ago my employees were all high school kids. I guess it's my go-to thought in these kind of things. :shame:
