A 24-year-old Fort Pierce Fupa was accused of neglecting a baby causing the child to have seizures and head trauma.

Shelby Shortnacy was arrested on Sunday afternoon on one felony charge of child neglect.

Port St. Lucie Police Department officers said on March 15 they were called by Florida Department of Children and Families about the agency investigating Shortnacy after a baby in her care came to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute with seizures and head trauma consistent with child abuse.

Shortnacy told police on March 10 the baby was sitting with her on her bed and the baby fell off the bed and onto the floor. She also told officers she had smoked marijuana a few hours before she was watching the child.

Medical professionals said the baby came into the hospital with injuries that wouldn't result from a fall off a bed, but was consistent with a "shaken baby syndrome."

Shortnacy told police she didn't take the baby to Lawnwood until March 13 because he seemed fine other than some bruising from the fall. She told officers she took the baby to Lawnwood on March 13 because he started having seizures.

A second person was arrested on a child neglect charge related to a shaken-baby syndrome case.

Doctors told police the baby, who has brain and spinal cord injuries and was suffering from seizures, likely was shaken aggressively.

Nicholas Serrano, 27, was arrested Monday and charged with child neglect.

On March 10, Florida Department of Children and Families officials asked Port St. Lucie police to investigate after a baby was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute with traumatic head injuries, police said.

Serrano told police the baby fell and was knocked unconscious, and he performed CPR until the baby started breathing again. He told officers he didn't take the baby to the hospital because he thought the baby was fine.

Shelby Shortnacy, arrested June 9 and charged with child neglect, told police she was in a relationship with and lives with Serrano, and that the baby had fallen off her bed and hit the floor days before March 10, officers said.

She told officers she didn't take the baby to the hospital earlier because the baby seemed fine, other than some bruises.

Doctors told police the baby had injuries that didn't come from falling on the floor, but were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Shortnacy told police Serrano was watching the baby when the baby fell.

She told officers Serrano called her frantically saying the baby fell off the bed and was unconscious. Shortnacy told police when she arrived, the baby seemed fine.

When officers asked Shortnacy why she didn't initially say Serrano was watching the baby when the baby fell, she said it was because she was afraid.
Police said the baby was diagnosed with papilledema, a condition where there's an increased pressure in or near the brain, causing the optic nerve to swell. The condition could cause permanent vision loss, if left untreated, according to Harvard Health.
