A 21-year-old Dlonta Khalil Melton has been convicted in the 2017 death of his girlfriend’s toddler daughter.

Melton was found guilty of reckless manslaughter and aggravated child abuse. Both are felony convictions. He was originally charged with murder.

According to the murder indictment issued in 2018, Melton caused the death of Levi by blunt force injury to the head and then withholding medical care. On the aggravated child abuse charge, the indictment said Melton "did willfully torture, willfully abuse, cruelly beat" Levi with blunt force injury to the head.
A 2-year-old Hoover girl is dead and police now say she was the victim of homicide.

Levi Ellise Pointer died one week ago today - on Thursday, Sept. 21. Hoover police today announced a murder charge against 19-year-old Dlonta Khalil Melton, the boyfriend of Levi's mother.

"This has been a somewhat complicated case and we've been very thorough and methodical in our efforts,'' said Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector. "For five days, Melton told no one that he had knowledge of the injury that caused this poor baby's death. Today we begin the process of holding him accountable for his actions."

Melton, who was the sole caregiver of Levi that day, could not provide any explanation as to what may have caused the child to be in distress.

She was rushed to Children's of Alabama where she was pronounced dead six hours later, at 9:45 p.m. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office, Rector said, determined that Levi suffered a significant skull fracture.

Derrick Pointer, Levi's father, said he is heartbroken at the loss of his only child. "She was just a joy to be around,'' Pointer said. "She was happy all of the time. She put a smile on everybody's face."

Pointer said he wants everyone to remember Levi for the joy that she brought to all. "She was,'' he said, "pretty much perfect."

A scuffle broke out at the Jefferson County Courthouse following the sentencing of D'Lonta Melton in the death of a two year old toddler. Melton was found guilty last month of reckless manslaughter. This morning Judge Teresa Pulliam sentenced Melton to twenty years in prison.

The victim, two year old Levi Pointer, was found in severe distress by paramedics at a Hoover apartment complex on Sept. 21, 2017. The 21 year old Melton was caring for the little girl. Investigators say Melton did not explain what had happened. Judge Pulliam said Melton had been given every opportunity to tell the truth and he did not. The coroner ruled Levi died of blunt force trauma from a significant skull fracture.

A group of family members and friends were in court today wearing t-shirts in Levi's honor. Her grandmother Ferlisi Turner asked for the maximum sentence. She spoke with us earlier about the loss of her beloved granddaughter.

Khadijha Turner, Levi's mother, asked the court to show mercy for Melton who was her boyfriend at the time of her daughter's death. She said Melton would never do anything to hurt her daughter. Others testified this crime was so out of character for Melton they could not believe it.

Melton pleaded for the judge to show mercy as he cried while reading a statement. He said he would never intentionally the baby girl and "she meant everything to me." He claims to have stumbled and fell while holding Levi. Melton's lawyer said his client was a four year varsity football player and graduated high school. He said Melton had leadership skills and never had any criminal justice issues.

In a tearful rebuttal, the prosecutor said Melton had lied many times and shown no remorse. She said Melton left Levi alone to "suffer and die."

Jail records show Khadijha Turner was booked in the jail on charges of disorderly conduct/disturbing the peace for her role in the fight that broke out after court had recessed. Ferlisi Turner said her daughter hit her first and she merely defended herself. Bailiffs could be heard repeatedly yelling to those involved to "stand down." They escorted the parties to their vehicles.

I am going to say something that is nasty and mean.

I bet the grandmother put men before her own daughter when she was growing up.

The daughter is probably a mirror that the grandmother does not want to look into.

Poor little Levi might have grown up to be just like her mother and grandmother before her.

Khadijha Turner knows no loyalty, she had none to her daughter, she will move onto a new man and will continue the cycle with another child until she is held accountable for her poor choices.

Even After Levi's death her mom cared more about this worthless dick than Levi.

There will come a day in the woman's life when she will wish that it was her daughter by her side - not some useless man that was more than likely just using her for sex and a place to stay.
