Newell has previous convictions for second-degree rape of an 11-year-old girl, possession of controlled substances and failure to register as a sex offender.

SEATTLE - A homeless, unemployed sex offender has been arrested on suspicion of attempted luring after an incident involving a 7-year-old boy at a QFC supermarket in Seattle, King County prosecutors said.

According to court records filed in the case, Henry Richard Newell, 33, approached the boy earlier this month at the QFC grocery at 1401 Broadway. The boy was in the bakery area of the store while his father was in the nearby floral section.

Newell walked past the boy, looked around, then walked directly up to the boy and said, "Come with me," according to court records.

When the young boy looked for his father, and Newell realized that the father was close by, he said, "Just kidding," and walked out of the store.

The incident was captured on one of the store's surveillance cameras.

When interviewed by detectives, Newell said he did not recall speaking to the 7-year-old boy but added that if he did talk to him it would have been to ask him to "come outside and have a cookie."

Newell is being held in King County Jail on $50,000 bail. Arraignment is scheduled for May 7 in King County Superior Court.
