A man has appeared in court in Northern Ireland charged with murdering an 11-month-old baby boy.

Sharyar Ali, 31, was looking after Hunter McGleenon while his mother was with her terminally ill grandmother.

A pathologist's report said the boy's fatal head injury was not accidental.

A prosecutor told Newry Magistrates' Court that Ali, who had been in a relationship with the baby's mother for a year, was in sole care of the child when the death happened on Tuesday.

The businessman, originally from Pakistan initially told police Hunter had slept all night, had fallen off a sofa onto a concrete floor and he had given him CPR and a cold shower to try to revive him.

A prosecutor said, according to the accused's version of events, he went back to sleep and woke at 9.30am when he received a parcel and said he noticed that the child had blue lips.

She added: "At no time did he ring for medical assistance."

He drove the child to his mother and told the family that the child was not able to breathe, at which point they rushed out but he was dead, the lawyer added.

Detectives have earlier CCTV footage of the accused travelling with the child to Dundalk in the Republic in a "distressed state", the prosecutor from the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) said.

She said from CCTV footage it appeared that he had entered a casino on the night and the child was left for two hours unattended in the back of a motor vehicle.

The infant's mother said at 3am she attempted to enter the property where they were staying but it was locked and she could not get in.

Ali later left the address where they were staying and travelled to Monaghan at 5am, his explanation was that he wanted to check that the post had arrived, the prosecutor said.

She added: "Hunter was again left on his own."

She said the accused changed his version of events several times and had given no account for how the child sustained the head injury.

His lawyer said his client had given a "consistent" reason for how the child's injury happened and offered his condolences to the infant's family.

He said he had called out to the car several times while he was at the casino to check the baby was still sleeping.

A man charged with murdering a baby in Co Armagh left the child alone for hours while he visited a casino, the High Court heard today.

Prosecutors also alleged Sharyar Ali went out in the middle of the night for a second time when he was supposed to be looking after 11-month-old Hunter McGleenon.
The little boy’s “lifeless” body was discovered later on November 26 last year when paramedics were called to a house in Keady. Examinations established that he had sustained head and abdominal injuries.

Ali, a 31-year-old Pakistani national was in a relationship with the baby’s mother at the time. Hunter had been left in his sole care from the previous day while she spent time with her terminally ill grandmother.
Ali’s account, the child rolled off a sofa and banged his head on the ground. The defendant claimed he found the boy face down on the floor and put him into a cold shower in a bid to revive him.

When Hunter started to move his arms and clench his mouth Ali said he dressed and put him to bed. Later, however, he noticed the baby’s lips had turned blue and brought him round to the house where his mother was staying.
A Crown lawyer said his version of events did not explain “multiple” injuries found on several areas of the child’s body. Ali told detectives that apparent blunt force trauma injuries to the abdomen were due to attempting CPR on the part of that body rather than the chest.
Ali’s wife and brother both attended court for his bid to be released from custody.

During the hearing it emerged that the accused is facing deportation proceedings in the Republic of Ireland. Lord Justice McCloskey was also told he does not have permission to remain in the United Kingdom.

So how many ways is this boy's mother a dumb bitch.

Too many for me to count right now. He should've been so happy to be out of that shit hole he's from that he should've been a model citizen and dad, but, no, instead he felt that old Pakistani sense of male entitlement from back home. He definitely deserves to go back never to return. The child was adorable.

Well, I might have missed something, but the wife going to court for his release wasn’t the boys mother. Or was she? They kept saying was in a relationship at the time-please tell me she didn’t marry him after he killed her baby.

Sharyar Ali, 34, will spend at least 13 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend's 11-month-old baby in November 2019.
The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) has referred the sentence of a man who murdered his girlfriend's 11-month-old baby to the Court of Appeal.
The PPS said it was appealing the sentence on the grounds that it is unduly lenient.

An unduly lenient sentence refers to one that falls outside the range of sentences a judge could reasonably impose after considering all relevant factors and sentencing guidelines.
A PPS spokesperson said while sentencing is a matter for the judiciary, its director has the power to refer sentences they consider to fall under this category.

"After careful consideration of the sentence handed down in the case of Sharyar Ali for the murder of baby Hunter McGleenon, we have determined that there is sufficient basis to refer the sentence to the Court of Appeal and have lodged the relevant application," it said.
