One-year-old Braxton Cover is blind, suffers seizures and slow physical and mental development because 25-year-old Ryan Wayne Cox violently shook him when he was 5 months old.
Cox pleaded guilty last month to neglect of a dependent, and has now been sentenced to prison for 10 years, followed by two years under the supervision of community corrections.
Cox babysat Cover on Oct. 28, 2018, and became frustrated at the infant. He told police he shook Cover about 13 times, and after shaking Cover, the boy became rigid, arched his back and became unresponsive.
The shaking caused bleeds in both sides of Cover's brain, and doctors had to drill five holes in the baby's head to reduce the swelling and drain the blood, according to the facts of the case.
Since his release, Cover is blind, suffers from seizures and has a tube surgically implanted so that he can receive medicine and nourishment. He is unable to eat.
Cover likely will be diagnosed with cerebral palsy as he gets older, but he is too young to make that diagnosis now, according to the facts of the case provided by the prosecutor's office.
