http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5362801/Man-23-jailed-horrific-abuse-two-year-old-girl.htmlA 23-year-old man has been jailed for 15 years for abusing a two-year-old girl so severely she had tears in her intestines.
Brenton William Reid was given the maximum sentence for second degree child abuse on Monday after pleading guilty in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Washington County Circuit Judge Mark K. Boyer fumed as he handed the sentence down, saying: 'The maximum sentence I can impose is 15 years.
'And you have earned every minute of it.'
The child's relationship to him has not been released in order to protect her identity.
Reid is believed to have abused her over a period of time in 2016 which culminated in her having to be taken to hospital after one particularly brutal episode.
His girlfriend Jennifer Buckler, 26, was also charged with abuse after admitting to hitting the girl.
She was not with them on June 10, 2016, when he called emergency services to claim she had fallen out of the bath and severely injured herself.
When they took her to hospital, she had 18 injuries on her face, head and body that were visible, and further damage had been done to her internal organs.
Doctors first discovered she had a tear in her small intestine then, upon further examination, found similar tears on her rectum and large intestine.
They could not tell whether the injuries were as a result of anal rape by penetration or by a foreign object or both.
The child underwent surgery for the injuries but survived the abuse and is now living with her grandfather.
Buckler pleaded guilty to second-degree abuse and second degree assault last year and will be sentenced next week.
On Monday, the judge apologized to the girl's relatives for not being able to reverse the abuse.
The child's grandfather says she now regularly suffers night terrors.
'It's likely (she) will have similar issues the rest of her life,' he said. She is four-years-old now.
Prosecutors said they were frustrated by the pair's 'absolutely ridiculous' explanation for the child's injuries but that plea deals were the best way to guarantee they would be jailed.
Circuit Judge Daniel P. Dwyer sentenced Buckler to five years in prison with all but the one year in jail suspended,
