The DA’s office said Samantha Shurtliff was sentenced to 175 years to life in state prison after being convicted of repeatedly sexually abusing two young children in her care, according to the Placer County District Attorney’s Office.
The abuse was carried out over an extended period against two children who were 6 and 8 years old when it began, officials stated.
Authorities said Shurtliff, a family member who had custody of the children, exploited her position of trust and forced the victims to perform sexual acts repeatedly.
Prosecutors reported that one of the children reported that the abuse occurred about 100 times.
Officials said in the press release that when a child resisted, Shurtliff would physically punish them and threatened both victims with being sent to an orphanage if they told anyone.
The abuse came to light when one of the children confided in a neighbor at a community pool, prompting a call to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators later built the case that led to her arrest and conviction.
Continue readingAt sentencing, the victims — now 9 and 11 — delivered impact statements describing the lasting trauma caused by the abuse. They were supported in court by members of Bikers Against Child Abuse.
Prosecutors said the case highlights that child sexual abuse is often committed by someone known to the victim, including family members, and noted that abuse by female offenders is believed to be underreported.
Despite the sentence, Shurtliff, 34, will be eligible for parole later in life under current California law, which the district attorney’s office said highlights ongoing concerns about early parole policies.
