Sage Smerk, 18, of Ohio has been arrested after admitting to sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl he was babysitting.

Smerk, faces charges of rape and failure to obey an order of a police officer, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

The child’s mother came home and found that her daughter and 2-year-old son had been left alone for two hours by Smerk, who was babysitting, according to a press release.

She called Smerk and asked why he left the children unattended. He then admitted to sexually assaulting the 5-year-old girl.

After switching his plea from not guilty to guilty, an 18-year-old Ohio man was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for attempting to rape a 5-year-old girl.

Sage Smerk withdrew his former plea of not guilty and entered a plea of guilty to one count of attempted rape, three counts of felonious assault and four counts of failure to comply. His guilty plea came with a maximum of 22 years in prison and a fine of $70,000.
After Smerk changed his plea, Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Alison designated him as a Tier III sex offender and sentenced the 18-year-old to 12 years in prison. Once Smerk is released from prison, he'll have to register with the local sheriff every 90 days for the rest of his life.

Smerk was originally indicted on a rape charge, stemming from an incident that occurred while he was babysitting on October 28, 2018. When the mother returned to the house, she found her 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son home alone, so she called Smerk.

When the mother, who was not identified, asked Smerk why he left the two young children unattended, he indicated that he sexually assaulted her daughter, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office. After the alleged admission, the mother called the police department and reported the incident.
