The RSPCA is appealing for witnesses after a woman strangled a swan to death in an "extremely upsetting" attack.

A passer-by saw the attack unfold in Riverside Park, County Durham last Thursday evening, reporting the woman had grabbed the bird, straddled it and wrung its neck.

Police were called and found the bird dead with an injury to its neck which suggested it had been strangled.

Officers have spoken to two women in connection with the incident.

Full Story:

They are extremely strong. Getting hit by the wings is very painful, and their beaks are vice grips. People don't think of water fowl having claws, but they do and they can leave a mark when angry.
Even ducks. Don't get between a mama duck and her babies.

Their beaks are serrated too so once they've got a grip you're going to have to at least tear some flesh to get away.
