A 28-year-old New Castle-area man turned himself into police in connection with a Thursday night incident at a soccer game during which a sports official was bitten.

Rannord A. Jones, of the first block of Freedom Trail, has been charged with felony assault, abuse of a sports official, terroristic threatening and harassment.

The 38-year-old victim was holding a blood soaked cloth over his chin when officers arrived. He had sustained a very deep and severe laceration, Navarro said.

He told the officers that while he was officiating a soccer game between two teams -- “Fulhundredâ€￾ and “Pizza by Elizabethâ€￾ -- he gave a player from Fulhundred a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The player, wearing jersey number 5, disagreed with the official’s decision to eject him from the game.

He immediately approached the official with clenched fists and the official tried to back away from him.

The player, later identified by police as Jones, then grabbed the official by the shoulders and pulled him toward his face with his mouth open.

Jones allegedly bit the official’s face just below his lower lip and underneath his chin, causing the deep laceration.

He then took off his shirt and ran off into the community.
