A pregnant woman was shot and killed Monday night in Georgia while she was with her toddler, police said.

The woman was identified as 24-year-old Auriel Callaway, Athens-Clarke County Police Department spokesman Geof Gilland said at a press conference Tuesday.

Her child, believed to be 2 or 3 years old, was not injured, Gilland said.

However, Callaway’s unborn child did not survive.

The shooting broke out at 9:37 p.m. at the Clarke Gardens apartment complex in Athens, according to police. Callaway, who was four months pregnant, was a resident of the apartment complex, Gilland said.

Gilland said “multiple individuals” have been detained in the case for “investigative purposes.”

He noted that those detained were not all necessarily suspects, but could also be witnesses or persons of interest.

Jermaine Arnold, who knew Callaway and says she witnesses the shooting, remembered her as a "beautiful soul."

"She really wasn’t out here as much ... God took her away from us too early," Arnold told ABC Atlanta affiliate WSB-TV.

The investigation into Callaway’s death is ongoing.

A Georgia woman has been arrested for the murder of a pregnant mother who was struck by a stray bullet as she shielded her three-year-old son from a gunfight.

Kiresa Cooper, 27, was booked on one count of aggravated assault and one count of felony murder, police announced Thursday.

Gunfire erupted between two groups outside the Clarke Gardens Apartments in Athens on Monday night.

Ariel Callaway, 24, was shot as she held her son's hand and tried to move him to safety. Police said the mother, who was four months pregnant, was an innocent bystander and was not intentionally targeted.

Callaway was rushed to an area hospital where she and her unborn baby were pronounced dead.

'This reckless act of violence took the life of a young mother in her prime as well as her unborn child,' said ACCPD Chief of Police Cleveland Spruill in a news release.

'Such senseless violence shall not be tolerated and all our investigative resources and tools were brought to bear to locate and apprehend the suspect.

'We appreciate the assistance of the community and our law enforcement partners in the quick apprehension of Cooper.'

Athens-Clarke County police Deputy Chief Jerry Saulters said Callaway's little boy was not hurt in the incident.

He is now being cared for by relatives.

The reason it didn't come up in the search is because there is a spelling error in her name in one of these stories.
Ariel or Auriel

Okay, I researched and found her obit.
The correct spelling is Auriel.
