It doesn't appear 25-year-old Edward Smith of Hamilton Township (Mercer County) was intentionally trying to injure the 3-year-old, who was struck in the face by the brick. It knocked out a tooth, and she needed stitches for a cut on her upper lip.

Smith went to his ex-girlfriend's apartment Saturday night, violating a restraining order. Smith left when the woman told him to leave, but then grabbed a landscaping brick and threw it through a glass sliding door.
He then allegedly re-entered the apartment and broke the woman's cell phone before stealing her car.

Authorities said Smith went inside the apartment of his ex-girlfriend despite an order by a judge to stay away, Rein said. The victim had applied for and received a final restraining order forbidding Smith from entering the property or going near the victim, police said.
Smith was told to leave and went out behind the apartment and threw a landscaping brick inside through the sliding glass door, striking the couple’s 3-year-old daughter in the face, police said. The toddler was standing in the kitchen near the window and the brick hit her face after it crashed through the window.
The impact knocked out the child’s tooth and cut her upper lip required stitches at the Emergency Department of Ocean Medical Center in Brick, police said.
After Smith threw the brick and hit the girl, he went back into the apartment, smashed the ex-girlfriend’s cellphone then stole her 1996 Dodge Stratus, police said.
The vehicle was later found in Lakewood at one of Smith’s relatives, police said. An arrest warrant was issued for simple assault, burglary, criminal mischief and theft. When Smith is arrested, his bail is already set at $150,000.
Smith is described as a black male, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen in the area of Congress Street in Lakewood but has family and contacts in the Trenton and Camden areas.
