Police in Florida arrested the owner of five dogs that had been so malnourished, they’d started eating one another.

Lakeland Police charged 54-year-old Genar Smith with felony cruelty to animals.

An officer responding to a complaint at Smith’s home on Dec. 30 saw two pit bulls chained to the ground, three in a medium-sized cage and one in a large cage.

One of the pit bulls in the medium-sized cage was dead. The two other dogs had eaten its neck and part of its skull.

One of the living dogs in the medium cage had part of its tail bitten off.

“All of the dogs that the officers saw appeared to be starving. Animal control showed up and also confirmed that as well,” Lakeland police spokesman Gary Gross told WFLA.

Police told local media that the dogs had been so severely starved, their rib cages and hip bones were clearly visible.

“This is one of the worst in a long time that we’ve had. Anybody hates to see a dog that is starved but then you have two dogs feeding off another. It’s shocking,” Gross said.

Smith signed over his ownership rights to the three male dogs, but declined to give up his female dogs.

All five dogs were transported to Animal Control.

He wants to keep the females? Check them for sexual trama, please. I wouldn't put anything past this sicko animal abuser. Intentionally starving your dogs and then watching as they feed off of your other dead dog? Sure, let him keep a couple!! Man's gotta be entertained, amiright?

A jury trial was set to begin in the animal cruelty case against Genar Smith, who was accused of starving his dogs to the point of emaciation.

Lakeland police officers found the starving dogs at Smith’s home after a neighbor saw a dog in a cage being eaten by two other dogs.

When an officer arrived at the home, he found six pit bulls locked up. The dogs were starving; with their rib cages and hip bones visible under their skin. There was no water or food in their bowls. Later, a Polk County animal control officer determined that hunger provoked the case of cannibalism. Smith was later forced to surrender his dogs to Animal Control.

The State Attorney’s Office did not make a plea offer to the defendant. Without a plea offer, Smith decided to forgo a trial and plead guilty to Circuit Judge Keith Spoto. Smith’s sentence was left to the sole discretion of Judge Spoto. Smith plead guilty to two counts of felony animal cruelty and four counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, followed by 42 months of probation. It was also ordered that he can no longer own any animals.
