Iowa’s largest pork producer has killed thousands of pigs with a gruesome mass-extermination method amid a coronavirus-fueled oversupply — slowly roastingsuffocating the animals to death, an investigation revealed Friday.

Iowa Select Farms was caught on camera using the disturbing so-called “ventilation shutdown,” where farmers close off airways to the hogs and pump hot steam into their barns overnight to slaughter them, according to The Intercept.

Footage of the practice reveals the heartbreaking cries of pigs as they succumb to death at temperatures more than 120 degrees, according to the outlet. It also reveals that some of the animals survived the horrifying ordeal while surrounded by piles of pig corpses.

“[They] shut the ventilation fans off, and heat up the building. That’s what the plan is. It’s horrific as it is,” a whistleblower told the outlet. “They’ve been euthanizing the animals, it’s been a test in a sense. Piglets were killed off in a barn with gas generators.”

The farm began using the execution method in late April to “depopulate” the pigs after meat processing plants were shut down due to the pandemic, according to the outlet, which conducted the investigation with the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere.

The Iowa City-based pork farm did a series of torturous experiments before enacting the operation, the whistleblower said.

“The first day they shut off all the fans and turned the heat up and the hottest they could get the building was 120 degrees. After four to five hours, none of the animals were dead. There was an attempt to induce steam into the building, along with the heat and the ventilation shutdown, and that is how they ultimately perfected their VSD operation,” the whistleblower said.

Other US farms began killing newborn piglets, gassing chickens and giving sows abortions due to the coronavirus-fueled supply-and-demand nightmare in April

i just found out that after pigs, get past a certain weight they can not go to slaughter house / market .
So if you have a large operation --and have younger livestock depending on that food / space they need - - half your crew is not showing up, due to the C-19 What do you do? A Hog being slaughter, is one of the most errie sounds they squeal forever i gonna sit on the fence on this story and try to keep PETA away while i eat a pork sandwich

I understand they likely don't have the capital to feed these animals for an unforeseen period of time. Additionally, have you ever seen the difference between a market pig and a full grown hog? So rationally I get it, but that has nothing to do with what I'm feeling. At all. I feel sickened.

Uncle raised hogs , chickens, cows & mules to work the fields. Not a large scale op - but yes big difference in size ( and no, really do not know much abt pigs - they scared me ) other then i like the meat if not tainted ( Balls off, before maturity / testosterone gets in meat )

I think I am gonna be sick. :sorry:
it will be a o tay

Hogs can get to be some big animals, guy next door had a few, one being an escape artist, he would head straight to our house, my stupid husband said he'll deal with it, that hog was about 4 feet tall, hoof to shoulder and who knows what it weighed, the hog chased that stupid man up on top of the car. Wannabe Superman had to yell to the neighbors to come get their hog. Meanwhile,I'm in the house laughing my ass off, the hog would have went home on it's own.

The first time I saw a full grown hog, I felt like I'd slipped back into the Ice Age.

UN FUCKING BELIEVEABLE

The original source for this info was The Intercept. It's gruesome and horrific reading to anyone with a conscience. There's a video version of the report which is click-at-your-own-risk.

Iowa Select did not just do this in May, they continued doing later incidents as of a June post found in Reddit.

As far as I can tell, Iowa authorities have not treated this behavior out of Iowa Select as being criminal neglect or unacceptably inhumane. Instead, they passed laws to help protect the company as it does this going forward.

Iowa Select has not responded to numerous questions .... But upon discovering that investigators from DxE had obtained video ... the company tried to preempt this reporting by admitting its use of VSD in an article...

The company “announced in a statement that they have been forced to euthanize some of its herd,” emphasizing not the pain endured by the animals that were exterminated, but the suffering of company executives

...video and audio devices recorded the start of the killing process, beginning with the sealing off of all airways, and continued all night as the pigs suffered and died

Lastly, the suffering was all about saving the company money - THEY COULD HAVE PUMPED IN CO2 OR A BETTER GAS AND ENDED THEM MUCH FASTER. THIS WAS POSSIBLE. But instead, these evil bastards took the absolute bottom denominator for their wallets and literally tortured those animals to death over long hours.

This shows how evil the white-color-psychopath types of our species can behave.

Had those been excess humans instead of hogs, and there had been a similar situation (specifically, no legal protection and no meaningful public revolt at the news), they would have done exactly the same thing to them.

How do you think the Holocaust gas chamber executions were able to actually happen, able to be ordered and executed? It's not about who or what suffered horribly, this was the type of mind that does these kinds of things to other living beings. Same for the fiends who were literally happy to own and run the large slave plantations in pre-civil-war USA with all of the torture and human misery that entailed.

This evil psyche remains alive in our world. IMO it is primarily a characteristic of individual personality inheritance (independent of any perceived race) combined with the effects of a culture that disregards the suffering of something (hog suffering in this case, but culture can extend this to human beings).

There are more than enough Germans living in Iowa to show them how to do this much more efficiently
