A Phoenix couple have been arrested on suspicion of child abuse after a 6-year-old boy told police he had been regularly beaten by them because he had trouble reading, according to Maricopa County court documents.

On Tuesday, police arrested the mother of the boy, 26-year-old Nicole Lynne Marker, and her boyfriend, 28-year-old William Johnson, in connection with the abuse, according to a probable cause statement from police included in court documents.

Phoenix police executed a search warrant on May 22 at their residence and viewed hours of home security footage on the home's Ring app. It captured activity inside the residence from Jan. 1 through April 22, court records say.

Detectives viewed more than 2,200 clips found on the Ring app, which included audio and video of the young victim being grabbed, lifted up and hit in the face repeatedly by a man, according to the probable cause document.

Court records say that Marker was caught on video punching and slapping the victim in the face, when he wasn't able to read words or sentences very well. After viewing the tape, there were at least 11 incidents involving the child's inability to do his homework.
