The lead pastor of a Florence church has been arrested, accused of sexually abusing young boys in his congregation.

John Martin was taken into custody on four counts of Sexual Abuse. Martin has been a pastor at Lighthouse Baptist Church for nine years.

He has since resigned from his position as pastor.

The arrest came less than a week after prosecutors say he confessed to his congregation at Lighthouse Baptist Church of inappropriate behavior. Prosecutors with the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office say Martin felt compelled to confess his sins on June 23.

“It came to light he admitted to four counts of sexual abuse of a child,” said Assistant District Attorney Coty Hand.

Members of the congregation immediately notified One Place of the Shoals, a family justice center. That organization launched an investigation immediately. Martin was taken into custody late last week.

Martin resigned immediately following the confession. But Hand believes, as a pastor, Martin took advantage of his congregation’s trust. “It is somebody they think is supposed to be caring for them and something happens to them. It’s probably a difficult process,” says Hand.

Prosecutors fully expect to discover more victims as the investigation unfolds. We’re also being told some of the victims could be in other states.

Three more people are accusing former Florence pastor John Martin of sexual abuse.

Martin was previously arrested, booked into the Lauderdale County Jail, and charged with four counts of sexual abuse of a child.

The latest allegations stem from Martin’s time in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Three people tell NBC affiliate WSMV that they were also abused by Martin when he was a youth pastor at Bellwood Baptist Church back in 2003.

Court documents show the families of the alleged victims reached out to police, who said they didn’t have enough evidence to charge Martin at the time, but they did speak to the head pastor of the Murfreesboro church.
That head pastor, according to one of the alleged victims, said they were “children of Satan” for making the accusations, and stood by Martin.

Murfreesboro police have re-opened the case into these latest allegations.

Just because they're the Devil's children doesn't make it okay to molester them. In fact, isn't fraternizing with the Devil's children a sin? Molestering them has to be even worse.

Stand by your man, I guess. Maybe that's why they call him the "head pastor".
