MIAMI — Video of a live shark being dragged behind a motorboat has prompted thousands of angry social media comments and triggered an investigation by Florida authorities, CBS Miami reports.

The video appears to show the shark, tied by its tail, being dragged behind a speeding boat. The camera then turns to show three men on that boat, laughing as they look back at the shark.

"Look, it's already almost dead," one man says while pointing at the shark.

More than 40,000 people have seen the video of the shark violently flopping around, popping above and below of the surface of the water.

The video was posted to Instagram by a deep sea tour boat operator who told CBS Miami the clip was sent to him. The tour boat operator said he was also sent a photo showing that the shark had died. That photo has not been made public.

Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed to CBS News that they are investigating.

The statement said it is "too early to speculate as to what, if any, violations took place in this incident."

“Florida has no tolerance for this mistreatment, and I am proud of the hard work of FWC law enforcement during this investigation to hold these individuals accountable for their horrific actions.”

The FWC says that investigators have conducted relentless research into the suspects' social media activity in addition to speaking with numerous shark experts.

“We appreciate the patience and support of the public as our law enforcement investigators worked with Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office to identify a number of serious violations that will be brought to the court for adjudication,” FWC Commission Chairman Bo Rivard told Tampa Bay ABC affiliate WFTS.

Rivard said he “hopes these charges will send a clear message to others that this kind of behavior involving fish and wildlife will not be tolerated.”

One of the Tampa Bay area men accused of dragging a shark in a viral video that sparked outrage across the country has pleaded guilty.

Michael Wenzel entered a guilty plea Thursday while appearing in front of a Hillsborough County judge, accepting the state's offer. One of his felony counts has now been reduced to a first-degree misdemeanor charge. The second felony charge has been dropped.

Wenzel was sentenced to 11 months of probation and 10 days in the Hillsborough County jail. He will serve on weekends starting March 8 and will be released on Sundays.

Wenzel also must complete 100 hours of community service. Half of those hours must be served at an animal shelter. His fishing license will be suspended for five years.

As Wenzel appeared in front of Judge Mark Wolfe, he appeared to be smiling. While announcing the plea deal, Judge Wolfe asked him, "is there something funny about this?"

Robert Benac, the other suspect who was facing felony charges of aggravated animal cruelty, rejected the state's offer to reduce one of the two felony charges to a misdemeanor if he served 10 days in jail. Benac instead chose to go to trial on June 24. He is facing a maximum sentence of 10 years if found guilty on the felony charges he's facing.
