The disturbing scenes are said to have been recorded at the San Juan de Aragon zoo, in Mexico City, where it was claimed many of the animals were in bad health.
Video footage of the incident was released by a Mexican welfare organization that claimed the animals in the zoo are dying from a lack of food.
In the video, the zebra, named as Karo, can be seen inside the zoo appearing to eat its own feces from the floor.

Peludos Al Aire En Sintonia Por Los Que No Tienen Voz as they are known, claim many of the animals are in bad health conditions, saying the zebra in the video is suffering from a skin condition and that wildebeest died there last week.
Workers also complained about the deaths of another 10 animals, according to the animal charity.
An elephant named Ely and an Asian elephant called Maggie in 2016 are two deaths that authorities in the city are said to be investigating, according to local media.
The zoo's management are yet to comment on the case but Mexico City's incumbent mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, reportedly admitted that the last time the government had invested in the zoo was during the first half of the 2000-2006 administration.
She said that there are specialists working in the zoo in order to avoid the animals being abused and to check up on their living conditions.
Sheinbaum said that there will be an investment in the zoo next year after the local government announced a cut in the funding for zoos earlier this year.
San Juan de Aragon zoo is said to have suffered several budget cuts this year under the local government's austerity program.
