An Oregon firefighter is on administrative leave after a domestic violence incident involving an infant, city officials said.

Kevin M. Howard, Jr., 31, is charged with first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence. He’s accused of assaulting a 2-month-old child.

Mr. Howard allegedly struck the infant with a closed fist in the chest. He then grabbed the baby by the jaw with a “claw grip” and jerked his head because he was crying, according to an affidavit filed in Oregon Municipal Court.

“It was just a misunderstanding,” Mr. Howard told The Blade on Monday.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. April 3 at Mr. Howard’s residence and the child’s mother witnessed the event, according to court records. Oregon police were notified by Lucas County Children Services at approximately 10 a.m. April 4 about a domestic violence case.

Mr. Howard was arrested by Oregon police at 9:45 a.m. Friday at the police station.

Kudos to the mother for calling it in right away.

and jerking his head. Ugh!

Fucking jerk. He needs to be yanked through a knothole backwards by his tail, then tie a knot in it. That kind of bullshit makes the whole bunch of them look bad. I hope he gets a good jail sentence. Asshat.

An Oregon firefighter and former Swanton police officer was ordered to serve 10 days in jail after he hit a 2-month-old boy in the face.

Kevin Howard, Jr., 31, of Oregon, previously pleaded guilty in Oregon Municipal Court to endangering children, a first-degree misdemeanor. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 170 days suspended. In addition, he will serve two years of probation, and complete anger management and parenting classes.

Until he finishes the anger management and parenting classes, Judge Louis Kovacs said he would not consider allowing Mr. Howard to have unsupervised contact with the baby.

During his sentencing, the victim’s mother told the court she saw Mr. Howard, whom she lived with at the time, hit the baby and shake his face. She took the baby to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center to be checked out.

She said her hope was that Mr. Howard got help for his anger issues so no one else gets hurt.

Mr. Howard’s attorney, Chris McGowan, asked for a probation sentence. He said while the child was taken to the hospital to be checked, he hadn’t been injured from the assault. Mr. McGowan also pointed out that Mr. Howard has no criminal history and has so far complied with all the court’s orders, including limiting his contact with the infant.

According to an affidavit filed in Oregon Municipal Court, Mr. Howard struck the infant in the chest with a closed fist. He then grabbed the baby by the jaw with a “claw grip” and jerked the boy’s head because he was crying, records show.

Mr. Howard resigned May 6 from Swanton Police Department. He remains on administrative leave with the Oregon Fire Department as a part-time firefighter, court officials said.
