A Paw Paw woman was arrested on charges of felony murder based on torture and first-degree child abuse in Van Buren County after her three-year-old stepdaughter was discovered dead.

Kate George, 31, was arraigned on Wednesday.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post responded to a report of a three-year-old child not breathing.

After further investigation, authorities determined the victim was with George, her stepmother, when she was found unresponsive.

The victim was identified by her family as three-year-old Sophia Ernst-Kuscrea.

The child's grandmother Cindy Ernst told Newschannel 3 Kate George called 911 when Sophia became unresponsive. Ernst said George admitted to placing restraints on Sophia's feet and hands and stuffing socks in her mouth. Ernst said the restraints were removed by the time police arrived and that the child was likely dead for several hours.

State Police said there were two other children in the home and both were removed by Child Protective Services, but both children are in good health.

Ernst said CPS has responded to previous complaints involving George and her husband.

The cause of death has yet to be determined. An autopsy was scheduled Wednesday at WMed.

Investigators say Sophia had been dead for some time before her stepmom called 911.

Ernst said, “She was bound to a car seat and had a sock placed in her mouth.”

Sources close to the investigations tell Newschannel 3 Sophia had tape over her mouth and suffocated to death.

“It's malicious, it's cruel, it's not right— no sane person could do that to a little girl,” Tasha Ernst said (mother of child).

Unable to go into specifics, MSP Detective 1st Lt. Chuck Christensen says scene of the murder has shaken some of the most experienced investigators.

“It's just tragic whenever you see the death of a young child like that,” Christensen said.

What, did not want to care for her because she was not yours? Angry, because her Daddy, loved her?
A seriously evil creature!

Mom & Sophia

If you go to Mom's face book there are pictures of Sophia and an older boy that is adorable and heartbreaking at the same time.

This an evil woman who preyed upon the most vulnerable of victims and I hope she spends the rest of her life in prison, tho I'm sure she won't since little children don't seem to be valued as much as other victims are.

But how can you take anything seriously when you have to put Paw Paw in front of every bit of news that comes out of that town?

I will admit, I didn't listen to this before I posted it, so make of it what you will.

A stepmother sits in jail, accused in the torturous death of her three-year-old stepdaughter.

The death so horrific, it sparked silent protests at the Van Buren County Courthouse.

"The deceased minor had ligature marks on her wrists, hands, neck, and ankles. It appeared as though she had been bound," recounts a Michigan judge, as her voice cracks.

The tearful judge was attempting to describe how three-year-old Sophia Ernst-Kucsera died.

"Kate George admitted that Sophia had been strapped into her car seat for over 24 hours without food or water," continues the judge.

The toddler was bound and already dead by the time that her step-mom, George, called 9-1-1.

Sophia's grandmother suspects it was 14 hours after she died.

"She also admitted she tied Sophia's hands and feet with a cord from a pair of earbuds, placed socks in her mouth, and taped her mouth shut with the socks still in her mouth," the judge reads. "Kate stated she had checked on Sophia several times before she died."

Sophia's father, Corey Kucsera allegedly admitted their actions to investigators.

"Sophia had not slept for several days and was disruptive to the rest of the family," says the judge. "Corey Kucsera admitted they strapped her in the car seat so she would not go downstairs or kick or hit the wall."

Sophia's family is still at a loss for words.

"They shaved her head. We don't know why. We don't know why they starved her," says her grandmother, Cindy Ernst.

She's speaking for Sophia, trying to give her a voice, saying that Child Protective Services is also to blame.

"The system failed her," Ernst says through tears. "[They were called] over seven times. I'm just angry at CPS. Look at my family. Look at my family.

ABC57 News went to Van Buren County's CPS office to confirm how many times officials were called to George's home.

They refused to even confirm or deny that there was an active information.

A representative told ABC57 News that in cases of severe child abuse, CPS will recommend the removal of the abused child.

"They failed my granddaughter," says Ernst. "The system just needs to be fixed."

Sophia's brother and step-brother were also living at the home at the time of the abuse but now are currently with foster care.

According to the family, neither boy was found to have been abused.

The biological father of a 3-year-old girl who died in September from what police called tortuous abuse is the second person to be charged with murder in the case.

Corey Kucsera, 30, of Almena Township, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his daughter.

The little girl's mouth had been taped shut, investigators said; and Sophia Ernst-Kucsera suffocated to death inside her father's home in Almena Township.

Kucsera's wife, Kate George, 31, was charged with first-degree murder in early September, accused of torturing and killing her 3-year-old stepdaughter.

George was arrested after she called 911 to report that Sophia was not breathing.

According to court records, George told investigators that she left Sophia strapped in a car seat without food or water for more than 24 hours.

Court records also indicate that the toddler's hands and feet were tied with the cord to a set of headphones and a sock was stuffed in her mouth before it was tapped shut.

We should give the bio penis Viagra shove his dick down this cow's throat and tape them together until she chokes to death on his dick.

Then we should shove a pineapple up his ass and a pair of socks to keep the pineapple nice and snug.

A Van Buren County man is going to prison for the murder of his 3-year-old daughter.

Corey Kucsera appeared in court Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the September death of his daughter, Sophia.

Authorities say Sophia was with her stepmother, Kate George, when she was found unresponsive in an Almena Township home on Sept. 4.

Two other children were removed from the home and are OK.

Michigan State Police believe the girl was the victim of ongoing child abuse.

Kate George earlier pleaded guilty to second degree murder and first-degree child abuse charges.

I wish they made monsters like these publicly answer what the child did that deserved them to be treated in such a depraved and inhumane way.

When these two get up and say they are sorry at their judgement it will not be enough.

No matter what they will still receive more mercy than Sophia ever received.

As the first of two people scheduled to be sentenced in the death of Sophia Ernst-Kucsera, 3, was handed prison time and child advocates said the murder shed light on the suffering of other children in West Michigan.

Michigan State Police Detective Sergeant Scott Ernstes worked the case and said Sophia's death highlights a larger problem in society concerning child abuse.

“There are a lot of people we talked to after who said, ‘Oh, I had some concerns,' and they feel bad they never called and unfortunately some cases end up where it is too late," he said.

Kate George was sentenced Monday to 31 years in prison for the murder of her stepdaughter, Sophia.

A Van Buren County man who murdered his 3-year-old daughter will spend decades in prison.

A judge Monday sentenced 31-year-old Corey Kucsera to 22.5 years to 50 years in prison for the September murder of his daughter, Sophia.

Authorities say Sophia was with her stepmother, Kate George, when she was found unresponsive in an Almena Township home on Sept. 4. Michigan State Police believe the girl was the victim of ongoing child abuse.

Kucsera pleaded guilty to second degree murder last month. In turn, prosecutors dropped the felony murder charge he was facing.
