1 Dead, 3 Injured in Synagogue Shooting in Poway, Deputies Detain Suspect

A woman has died after shots were fired inside a Poway, California synagogue filled with people celebrating the last day of Passover. A suspect was taken into custody approximately two miles away from the synagogue while three patients were rushed to a nearby hospital.

A man with a rifle entered Chabad of Poway on Rancho Bernardo Road, west of Interstate 15 at 11:23 a.m. and opened fire on the people inside, law enforcement officials said.

“We didn’t hear him screaming or saying anything. He was just focused to kill. You saw the hate and the murder in his eyes," one witness told NBC 7. "He had a vest and he had clips in the vest. He was ready. He was ready. He came in to kill.”

The suspect John T. Earnest, 19, of San Diego, does not have a criminal history and has no apparent connection with white supremacist groups, according to San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.

A 60-year-old woman died from injuries suffered in the shooting. A girl and two adult men, including a rabbi, were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals, officials confirmed.

I don’t agree with organized religion but can someone please explain the need to shoot up and burn down churches and people inside? Honestly I really don’t get it.. it boggles my mind?!

I'm beginning to suspect that every one of these shootings, be it school, church or movie theater, is perpetrated by victims of the Monarch Program....Also known as MK Ultra.

Anti-semetics are perhaps the most bizarre and mindblowing of all bigots. You primarily find these fucks in Eurotrash-land, kinda rare to see this belief system in America.

There is a significant number of people, most Europeans actually, who firmly believe that Israel is behind Islamic terrorism, and not just cuz of some, "Islamic extremists are motivated by the support the West provides Israel" or anything halfway logical like that, no they firmly believe Isarel is funding and helping to actively create terrorists. There's a shit ton of people who think jews are behind ISIS. Im not making that up, and it's not some rare oddball believe either, a LOT of mainly Europeans believe that.

It's just astounding that people can STILL have such an irrational hatred of Jews and STILL in this day and age think theyre behind so much, plans to dominate the entire world haha? It's amazing.

A manifesto posted online shortly before the attack and purporting to be by Earnest cites hatred of Jewish people as the motive for the attack, and takes credit for a separate arson attack on an Escondido mosque last month.

The manifesto also cites as inspiration attacks on mosques in New Zealand last month, and a deadly shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue exactly six months ago.

Earnest is believed to be a nursing student at California State University and has no known criminal record.

A 22-year-old white supremacist was denied a chance to address a courtroom before a judge sentenced him Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for bursting into a southern California synagogue on the last day of Passover in 2019 with a semiautomatic rifle, killing one worshipper and wounding three others.

An agreement with prosecutors that spared John T Earnest the death penalty left little suspense about the outcome, but the hearing provided 13 victims and families a chance to address the killer and gave a sense of finality to a case illustrating how online hate speech can lead to extremist violence. Many gave heart-wrenching accounts of how their lives were upended and how determined they were to persevere despite such devastating loss.

Earnest’s attorney, John O’Connell, said his client wanted to make a statement but Judge Peter Deddeh of San Diego superior court refused, saying he did not want to create “a political forum” for white supremacist views. Earnest has not spoken publicly or disavowed earlier statements.

“I’m not going to let him use this as a platform to add to his celebrity,” the judge said, pointing to comments that Earnest made to police when he was arrested, hand gestures to the audience during a previous hearing and his probation report.

A prosecutor asked Deddeh to reconsider his refusal to let Earnest speak after conferring with the defense attorney about the substance of his remarks, but the judge did not budge.

The San Diego county district attorney, Summer Stephan, who listened to victims from a front-row seat, told reporters that Earnest’s planned statement was “more spewing of hatred and propaganda” and that the judge made the right call. The prosecutor asked the judge to reconsider only to guard against any possibility that Earnest alleges he was treated improperly, she said.

SAN DIEGO -- A 22-year-old white supremacist was sentenced Tuesday to life in federal prison for killing a woman and injuring three others in a shooting at a Southern California synagogue in 2019, adding to the life term he received three months earlier in state court.

John T. Earnest declined to speak in a courtroom full of victims, families and congregants. In state court, his attorney said he wanted to speak but a judge refused, saying he didn't want to give a platform for his hate-filled speech.

Earnest's attorney, Ellis Johnston III, said his client acknowledged his actions were “inappropriate,” a statement that was greeted with skepticism by prosecutors. Peter Ko, a federal prosecutor, said Earnest's show of contrition came shortly after the shooting in a recorded phone call to someone else.

U.S. District Judge Anthony Battaglia said the federal and state life sentences would run one after the other instead of concurrently, acknowledging it was symbolic but that it was meant to send a strong message. The judge denied the defense attorney's request to have Earnest stay in state prison.

“Obviously this is as serious as it gets,” Battaglia said.

Earnest was tied to restraints and looked straight ahead without expression during the two-hour hearing, which marked the end of legal proceedings against him.
