The parents of a California toddler who was last seen in March 2015 have been charged with murder and child endangerment resulting in death, according to authorities.

Omar Misael Lopez, 33, and Mayra Alejandra Chavez, 26, from Oxnard, were arrested on suspicion of murder on Valentine's Day.

They had been in custody on civil arrest warrants since October for failing to give police accurate information on their three-year-old child's whereabouts, police said.

Kimberly Lopez was last seen by social workers with Lopez, who had guardianship of the three-year-old, police said. Chavez was only allowed to visit Kimberly with the supervision of Lopez and of her mother Maria Lopez.

Child services didn't look into Kimberly's well-being until July 2016, when someone contacted them with 'concerning' information, Oxnard police said in a statement.

When they tried to check on the toddler several times, the girl's parents told them she was living in Mexico with family.

Ventura County Children and Family Services reported Kimberly missing on September 2016, after Lopez and Chavez were unable to provide proof of their daughter's whereabouts.

The parents told police their daughter was alive last time they saw her, but after months in jail their story changed.

In August, Chavez told investigators his daughter had hurt her head while he was trying to change her pants, Oxnard Detective Scott Aaron said in a court declaration.

He and Lopes said they had not sought medical treatment for Kimberly, who according to them had two seizures after she hurt her head.

They alleged that the toddler died the same night and they drove her body to Tijuana, per Oxnard Detective Scott Aaron's declaration.

Presence of human decomposition was found in the back of their vehicle by human remains detection dogs, but Kimberly's remains have not been found.

Interviews with family and friends of the parents lead authorities to believe Lopez and Chavez were 'the key' to locating Kimberly, police said.

Authorities believe the little girl was killed on June, 2015, soon after what would have been her third birthday, the Ventura County Star reported.

If they are convicted, Chavez could get 47 years to life in prison while Lopez could get a maximum sentence of 42 years to life, according to officials.

Mayra Alejandra Chavez, 27 was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2015 killing of her 3-year-old daughter, whom she had previously lost custody of multiple times because of issues with drugs and abuse, prosecutors said Monday.

Police began investigating the case in September 2016, after Ventura County Children and Family Services reported it had been trying to locate the toddler for over a year to no avail. Social workers last saw the girl in March 2015.

Chavez originally lost custody of her child at birth after the baby tested positive for both methamphetamine and marijuana, according to prosecutors. Kimberly was placed into foster care for about nine months, then was returned to her mother’s care after Chavez completed drug and parenting classes, the DA’s office said.

But after regaining custody, Chavez allegedly began to abuse her daughter. Kimberly was again put into foster care, but Chavez again sought to regain custody. Despite this, Chavez continued to torture and mistreat the girl, which ultimately led to her death, officials said.

Kimberly’s father, Omar Lopez, gave jurors a detailed account of Chavez’s increasingly abusive treatment of her daughter, and said the fatal incident occurred when the mother pulled the girl’s legs from underneath her to change a diaper, causing her to hit her head and suffer seizures, the Ventura County Star reported.

Lopez also testified that he and Chavez disposed of their daughter’s body in Tijuana, according to the DA’s office.

Lopez offered his candid testimony in exchange for leniency in sentencing, and agreed to plead guilty to charges of child endangerment and perjury while prosecutors dropped his second-degree murder charge. He is expected to be sentenced to 14 years in prison, according to the newspaper.

An Oxnard grandmother admitted on Thursday that she helped her daughter and daughter’s boyfriend cover up the killing of the couple’s 3-year-old daughter, prosecutors said.

Maria De Jesus Lopez, 45, pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to destroy and conceal evidence in the death of Kimberly Lopez, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

When Maria learned of her granddaughter’s death, she lent the couple her car and gave them money so that they could take Kimberly’s body to Tijuana and destroy her remains, according to the DA’s office.

The girl’s body was never recovered.

Over the next 15 months, as officials grew increasingly suspicious regarding Kimberly’s whereabouts, Maria also allegedly helped conceal the death from investigators.

The grandmother will face a maximum penalty of 180 days in county jail and three years of formal probation when sentenced.

An Oxnard grandmother who helped her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend dispose the body of the couple’s 3-year-old daughter was sentenced Tuesday, officials said.

Maria De Jesus Lopez, 45, was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 36 months formal probation, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said. She pled guilty last month to one felony count of conspiracy to destroy and conceal evidence.

Maria De Jesus Lopez was ordered by a judge to not have any contact with her daughter and is not allowed to associate with any children under the age of 18, unless a responsible adult approved by a probation officer is present.

Kimberly’s body was never found.

An Oxnard woman who murdered her three-year-old daughter and disposed of her body in Mexico could spend the rest of her life in prison.

Mayra Alejandra Chavez, 27, of Oxnard was sentenced to 37 years to life in prison for the death of her daughter Kimberly Chavez Lopez in 2015, Ventura County District Attorney Gregory Totten announced on Tuesday.

Chavez was found guilty of second-degree murder, assault resulting in the death of a child, and torture in December 2016. She also pleaded guilty to three counts of perjury for lying in court testimony in 2016 when authorities were looking for Kimberly, unaware that Chavez had killed her.

Now we just have to wait for the dick's sentence.

The mother should have gotten a harsher sentence. Why she fought to get this girl back just to brutalize break my heart.

The father of little Kimberly Lopez was sentenced for his role in her death.

34-year-old Omar Lopez was sentenced to 14 years in state prison.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to felony child abuse and perjury in connection with the 3-year-old daughter's killing and the effort to cover up the crime.

Lopez also testified against Kimberly's mother, 27-year-old Mayra Chavez of Oxnard, at her murder trial, telling jurors about the abuse his daughter experienced in her short life, and the effort to make sure her remains were never found following her death.

Chavez was sentenced earlier this year to 37-years-to-life in prison.

Lopez's sentencing is the final chapter in the sad and tragic story of a little girl who suffered brutality during her short life that led to her death.

Kimberly's remains were never found but Lopez said they were taken to Mexico and destroyed in an effort to cover up her murder.

The sperm donor got off way too easy.

Rest in peace Kimberly.

Sometimes even after these monsters are sentenced there is no relief from the thoughts of how a child suffered.

It is painful to imagine what goes through a child's mind when they are taken from love and security and placed back into a situation of terror.

None of these individuals look like they will have one ounce of sorrow for what they did to this child.

A state appellate court this week upheld an Oxnard mother's 2018 convictions for the torture and murder of her 3-year-old daughter.

Monday's ruling from the 2nd District Court of Appeal means Mayra Chavez's sentence of 37 years to life in prison stands. She filed her appeal in May 2019.

"Substantial evidence supports the jury’s determination that Chavez intended to cause extreme pain and suffering for some sadistic purpose. Chavez began to inflict injuries on (Kimberly Lopez) almost immediately after she gained custody of her daughter, when K.L. was just eight months old," according to the court's rulings.

Chavez's appellate attorney, Jennifer Mannix, wrote in briefs to the court that prosecution did not show enough evidence supporting the injuries were inflicted for some sadistic purpose, which is an element of the torture offense.

The sheer amount of injuries documented by authorities was enough to satisfy that element. The child was bruised, bit, burned, water-boarded, poked in the eye and had things thrown at her, the court said in its decision.

"Such a horrific course of conduct, extending over a 14 period of more than two years, provided circumstantial evidence of Chavez’s intent to torture her daughter," the ruling states.

Lastly, Chavez's attorney argued the Oxnard woman shouldn't have been sentenced for both the assault and murder because they entailed the same conduct and pattern of physical abuse. The appellate court was "not persuaded," the ruling states.

The assault was an act of physical abuse and the murder, which was Chavez's failure to seek medical attention, was out of self-preservation, the ruling states.

"Punishing Chavez for both the assault and the murder was thus proper," according to the court opinion.
