82.5% of shoplifting in Oberlin is done by students, and the racial breakdown of arrests is in proportion to the population.

On a more humorous but still annoying note:
The campus atmosphere turned Oberlin College “social justice” activism into self-parody. The black student union protested that the Africana House dining hall did not regularly serve fried chicken (seriously). Other students protested dining hall “cultural appropriation” of Asian food, noting as to the dining-hall version of General Tso’s Chicken, “nstead of deep-fried chicken with ginger-garlic soy sauce, the chicken was steamed with a substitute sauce.” Once again, the administration sought to placate the activists, with the Director of Dining Services confessing that “we recently fell short in the execution of several dishes in a manner that was culturally insensitive.”
Not serving deep fried chicken sounds like the school was trying to serve healthier food.

And General Tso Chicken is a Chinese American take on Hunan cooking. But only a silly SJW would call it cultural appropriation instead of just saying "this dish sucks because it's steamed chicken breast instead of deep fried thigh, and the sauce is lousy"

David Gibson has not lived to see the end of this distressing saga. In late 2018, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and, on November 16 of this year, he passed away aged 65.

So...can they sue AGAIN?

Going on national television and repeating in any capacity these accusations of racism is essentially a new offense. They should hit Oberlin, or at least the individual speaking in the interview, again. Be hilarious.

Im shocked a PRESIDENT of a university would say something this fucking dumb as what this bimbo told Koppel. I dont care how liberal you are, i dont care if you think Oberlin is in the right, anyone hearing that idiocy should be driven as far away from that trash university as possible based solely on that.

Oberlin is whackier than ever!
A black professor who taught "social justice writing" at Oberlin, and who is obsessed with deranged Jewish conspiracies was fired for refusing to cooperate with an investigation into her conduct. She then sued for discrimination, and got a settlement!

Next chapter in the Get Woke Go Broke Oberlin Farce: Union Busting The Food Service and Custodian Jobs!!
Financial reality has struck and Oberlin must tighten the purse strings.

Statement from Oberlin College
[...]
...we have faced unprecedented financial and demographics challenges, including an unsustainable structural deficit.

Our work to eliminate this deficit has included changes in our healthcare benefits, our retirement benefits and the size of our administrative staff — all financial levers identified in the One Oberlin report endorsed by the General Faculty and adopted by the Board of Trustees. We have contracted tenure track faculty lines and are relying less on visiting faculty. While these changes have been difficult, they will allow us to establish a firmer financial foundation for decades to come.

Yet there is more that we must do. As you will recall, 63 percent of our budget is dedicated to compensation. To ensure our excellence, we must continue to address the largest share of our budget while we simultaneously invest in our future.

Against that backdrop, Oberlin has notified the United Auto Workers that we are formally considering contracting with outside vendors for dining and custodial services currently provided by college employees. This would affect roughly 52 full-time dining employees and 56 full-time custodial employees, depending on the number of filled positions this summer, when the transition would occur. This step is permitted under our UAW contract, and we will begin collective bargaining with the UAW in coming weeks to determine how best to move forward.

Over the long term, these changes could save a critical $1 million a year in the operational costs of the dining program, and potentially another $1 million or more a year in custodial services, as potential vendors are better able to reach economies of scale based on their size and expertise.
[...]

The ferocious attacks on the Gibson family and the willingness to discard long-term union custodial and dining hall workers demonstrate that Oberlin College may not be what it purports to be. As that sinks into the public consciousness, something will have to give. Loss of credibility for a higher education institution can be more damaging than money. Just ask Mizzou and Evergreen State.

Wow.

A socialism mill that is anti-union!!!??

Why not just increase tuition? Surely these shit for brains would still pay up even if it meant another 10 grand a year. I honestly cant see some fools having a financial breaking point, not with how much theyre already willing to spend.

And why the fuck is the United AUTO Workers providing union shit for custodians and lunch ladies???

Hopefully the school goes down and goes down HARD.

Oberlin College attempt to overturn defamation suit from bakery it called 'racist' falls short

Oberlin College in Ohio suffered another legal blow in its years-long battle to overturn a jury decision that found the college defamed a local bakery, with an Ohio appeals court upholding a previous $25 million judgment awarded to a local business that claims the college committed libel against it.

In 2016, Allyn Gibson, the son of Gibson’s Bakery and Food Mart owners David Gibson and Allyn Gibson, chased down and tackled a Black student who he suspected stealing a bottle of wine. Two Black students at Oberlin College, who were friends of the individual who stole the bottle of wine, became involved in the physical incident. All three students were arrested, according to court documents, and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges.

The bakery's owners sued Oberlin College in 2017, claiming that the school had libeled them and said that their business was harmed by their actions.

In a Thursday 9th District Court of Appeals ruling, which was unanimous, the three judge panel rejected Oberlin college's claims and upheld a previous ruling that the college is responsible for paying the Gibson's legal fees, amounting to $6.3 million. The previous ruling also awarded $25 million to the bakery in damages.

Oberlin to pay bakery $36M in defamation suit over racial profiling

Oberlin College has agreed to pay over $36 million to the family-owned bakery the Ohio school falsely accused of being racist in a shoplifting incident.

Gibson’s Bakery filed suit against the progressive college in 2017 for siding with three black students who claimed the store racially profiled them when they were caught stealing from the shop the year before.

The hefty payout comes after the Ohio Supreme Court last month denied Oberlin’s bid to hear its appeal of the 2019 jury verdict, which found that the college defamed the bakery when a staffer made flyers claiming that Gibson’s had a history of racial profiling.

The college announced the award in a statement Thursday, saying that the Board of Trustees decided not to push the matter further.

“We are disappointed by the Court’s decision. However, this does not diminish our respect for the law and the integrity of our legal system,” the small liberal arts college said.

Oberlin College owes Gibson's bakery $36M in defamation case, so why won't it also say 'sorry'?

On Sept. 8, following the Ohio Supreme Court’s refusal to hear Oberlin’s appeal of the largest defamation judgment in Ohio history, the college issued a statement promising to pay the $36.59 million judgment, including interest. It’s fair to assume that Oberlin’s other costs, including uninsured attorneys’ fees, probably amounted to $6 million to $10 million more.

In its statement, the college promised to pay the $35.59 million judgment, including damages and accumulated interest. Oberlin noted that it values "our relationship with the City of Oberlin" and looks forward to "continuing our support of and partnership with local businesses…." Conspicuously absent from this missive was any form of a mea culpa directed to Gibson’s Bakery and the Gibson family, the victim of Oberlin’s defamatory action.

Liability and the absence of a discriminatory past on the bakery’s part are now both legally undisputed, so it prompts the question: where are the adults among the Oberlin faculty and alumni? Having wasted about $40 million in an effort to prove what was a fatally flawed legal case from the outset, it’s well past time that Oberlin alumni came together to petition Ambar and her board to issue a formal apology to the Gibson family.

Baker says Oberlin College’s $36M payout over false racism claim is ‘bittersweet’

The owner of a family-run Ohio bakery awarded $36 million in damages after Oberlin College falsely accused the shop of racism on Sunday called the payout “bittersweet.”

Lorna Gibson, of Gibson’s Bakery, appeared on “Fox & Friends Weekend” after the liberal arts school finally forked over the settlement this month for the November 2016 incident.

“It is definitely bittersweet,” she said on the Fox News show.

“It took a tremendous toll. A lot of stress, a lot of financial toll. It definitely hit us hard.”

Both Gibson’s father and husband died as the lengthy legal battle over the incident played out.

The bakery eventually won its defamation suit against Oberlin, which had sided with three black students who claimed the store racially profiled them when they were caught shoplifting wine.
