A teenager who admitted to abusing a 5-month-old baby that underwent emergency brain surgery will serve a year in jail.
Richard Lee Stearns, 19, of Ravenna earlier pleaded guilty to second-degree child abuse.
The 5-month-old child, who ended up undergoing an emergency craniotomy, showed evidence of new and old head trauma, according to a Child Protective Services petition.
Stearns was sentenced earlier this month to 12 months in jail, with credit for two days, by Muskegon County Circuit Judge Annette Smedley.
Smedley also ordered that after serving six months, Stearns is to participate in the EXIT program. EXIT, which stands for Empower Ex-Offenders In Transition, provides job and life skills training, education and work experience. Smedley also ordered Stearns to participate in the “Thinking Matters” program, which is aimed at reducing criminal thinking and behavior.
Stearns told investigators various stories about how the baby suffered the injuries, including the baby fell while being removed from a “bouncy saucer,” that he spun around very fast while holding the baby whose head was “bobbing from side to side,” and that he threw the baby 5 to 6 feet in the air and caught her several times, according to the petition.
The child’s mother told investigators that Stearns told her he dropped the baby, the petition states.
