A 20-month-old baby boy has sustained serious brain damage and is in critical condition after an alleged child abuse incident at a babysitter's Shorewood home on Friday, Feb. 2.

The babysitter, 33-year-old Candace Turner, has been charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with physical abuse of a child and neglect of a child. If convicted on both felony counts, she faces a maximum prison sentence of 21 years.

Turner called 911 Feb. 2 when the baby did not wake up from a nap at her home. When paramedics arrived, they found roughly 30 bruises on the baby, including bruises on the neck, forehead, head, arms, legs and stomach.

The baby's parents dropped the baby off at Turner's house around 8:30 a.m. Feb. 2. Around 3:25 p.m. Turner texted the baby's parents, saying he "bonked his head pretty good today," according to a criminal complaint.

In the text messages, Turner said the baby and a 2-year-old child were playing with a Little Tikes toy picnic table. The 2-year-old pushed the picnic table, causing the baby to fall to the ground. The picnic table was only one foot tall. Turner said another 8-month-old baby "got spooked" by the baby's crying, and then hit the baby with a baby walker, according to the complaint.

Turner said she put the baby down for a nap around 12:45 p.m., and when he did not wake up, she called 911 at the suggestion of the baby's father.

The baby was later evaluated by a doctor, who stated the “only diagnosis that can explain the types, severity and distribution of injuries is severe, life-threatening child physical abuse.” The doctor said the injuries are consistent with “blunt force trauma to the head, right arm and right leg” and are “inconsistent with the history of a short household fall,” according to the complaint.

The doctor added the bruising around the baby's neck is "highly suggestive of (the baby) being forcibly and suddenly grabbed from behind by an article of clothing, causing the seam of the collar to cause traumatic injury to the neck," according to the complaint.

Five days later, on Feb. 7, the doctor told police the baby has no activity on the right half of his brain and is likely to suffer permanent damage as a result of the traumatic brain injury.

Especially if that baby is brain damaged for life, this bitch needs to spend far more than 21 years in prison, because in 21 years, his parents will still be taking care of their handicapped son, whose life will be a mere shadow of what it could have been.

A Milwaukee woman convicted in a child abuse case that left a 20-month-old boy in critical condition was sentenced to prison. Prosecutors said the caregiver tried blaming other children for the boy’s injuries.

Candace Turner, 34, on June 3 pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect — great bodily harm.

Turner was sentenced to serve three years in prison and four years’ extended supervision.

According to a criminal complaint, on Feb. 2, 2018, a 911 call came in from a home near Woodruff and Congress in Shorewood for an unresponsive baby. Turner was found at the scene, crying hysterically. The baby, born in May of 2016, “had approximately 30 bruises covering his body,” including a large bruise to his forehead. He wouldn’t open his eyes or respond to stimuli. Turner told investigators the boy fell off a toy picnic table.

The child’s parents responded to the scene, and the 20-month-old was taken to the hospital. There, it was revealed he had multiple bruises covering his body — on his forehead, neck, head, arms, legs, and stomach.

According to the complaint, the boy was likely to suffer permanent damage as a result of traumatic brain injuries, with no activity reported on the right half of his brain. He was in critical condition on Feb. 8, 2018.

The complaint included a detailed description of the child’s injuries, and said doctors concluded “the only diagnosis that can explain the types, severity, and distribution of injuries is severe, life-threatening child physical abuse.”

It said the child suffered injuries “consistent with blunt force trauma to the head, arm, and leg” and the injuries were “inconsistent with a short household fall.” The complaint said the child’s condition was worsened because Turner did not seek medical attention right away.

I guess the prognosis for the boy has not improved since there was no update on his condition.
