TAOS, N.M. – Law enforcement officers searching a rural northern New Mexico compound for a missing 3-year-old boy didn't locate him but found 11 other children in filthy conditions and hardly any food, a sheriff said Saturday.

The children ranging in age from 1 to 15 were removed from the compound in the small community of Amalia, New Mexico, and turned over to state child-welfare workers, Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said.

Two men were arrested during the search while two women at the compound were initially detained before being released pending further investigation, Hogrefe said.

One of the men, 39-year-old Siraj Wahhaj, was jailed on a Georgia warrant alleging child abduction while the other man, identified only as Lucas Morten, was arrested on suspicion of harboring a fugitive, Hogrefe said.

Online court records checked Saturday didn't list defense attorneys who could comment on behalf of the men.

The search stemmed from an investigation involving the Taos County Sheriff's Office, the FBI and Clayton County, Georgia, authorities, Hogrefe said in a statement.

Amalia is 145 miles (233 kilometers) northeast of Albuquerque and in an isolated high-desert area near the New Mexico-Colorado border.

Hogrefe said authorities had conducted surveillance of the compound while looking for the missing boy before he decided Thursday to get a search warrant immediately after a Georgia investigator forwarded a message in which someone at the compound reportedly told another person that people at the compound were starving and needed water.

Hogrefe said the search did not turn up the missing boy, identified by the sheriff as AG Wahhaj, but that investigators had reason to believe the boy had been at the compound fairly recently.

It's not clear whether the boy and Siraj Wahhaj are related.

There were no injuries during the search, the sheriff said. But Wahhaj and Morten initially refused to follow commands and Wahhaj was armed with a rifle and four handguns, Hogrefe said.

There was little food in the compound, which consisted of a small travel trailer buried in the ground and covered by plastic with no water, plumbing and electricity, he said.

"The only food we saw were a few potatoes and a box of rice in the filthy trailer," the sheriff said.

The adults and children appeared like "refugees not only with no food or fresh water, but with no shoes, personal hygiene and basically dirty rags for clothing," the sheriff said. "We all gave the kids our water and what snacks we had - it was the saddest living conditions and poverty I have seen."

It sounds like many of the stories we have here about starving dogs and puppies in someone's basement or back yard. Except this time it's humans.

How sure are they that all these kids are theirs?? Almost sounds like a hiding spot for child sex-trafficing.
Highly unlikely. http://www.jewishworldreview.com/0718/skenazy073118.php3

Reminds me more of a wannabe Marcus Wesson.
Good thing they found those children before winter. If they intended to hunker down for the winter, they would have frozen at that altitude.

Three women believed to be the mothers of 11 children found hungry and living in a filthy makeshift compound in rural northern New Mexico have been arrested, following the weekend arrests of two men, authorities said Monday. A message that people were starving, believed sent by someone inside the compound, led to the discovery of the children.
[...]
Taos County, New Mexico, Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said that the women and the two men face charges of child abuse. He identified the women as Jany Leveille, 38-year-old Hujrah Wahhaj and 35-year-old Subhannah Wahha. They were arrested in the town of Taos and booked into jail.

Poor little boy is probably dead. I wonder if some other child is missing, but no one bothered to look.

Sisters Hujrah Wahhaj, 38, and Subhanah Wahhaj, 35, were charged along with their sister-in-law Jany Leveille, 35 on Sunday, two days after police first said they had been 'brainwashed' by the men at the compound. The men are Siraj Wahhaj, 39. He is a brother two of the women and is married to Leveille. Also arrested was Lucas Morton, Subhanah's husband. Siraj has been missing since December when he vanished from Georgia with his three-year-old disabled son, AG.

Their hijabs look sloppy. What kind of devout Muslim woman does not know how to put on a hijab?

Yes, I was thinking this morning that the day that exorcism was performed was the day he died.

Those women don't look very starved. Did all the adults eat OK, and just starve the children? Like the Turpins?. But a self made Islamic cult.
As for the hijabs, I think the police gave them a piece of clean cloth for the mugshot.

I was afraid that would be the case. :bigtears: The child had significant disabilities, and I was thinking just last night how hard it would be for a fragile child to survive in such filthy, inhospitable, harsh conditions. Poor Abdul-ghani, his mother loved and wanted him. She must be devastated. The asshole, kidnapping father should be put to death.

The father of a missing Georgia boy was training children at a New Mexico compound to commit school shootings, prosecutors said in court documents obtained Wednesday.

The documents say Siraj Ibn Wahhaj was conducting weapons training with assault rifles at the compound near the Colorado border where 11 hungry children were found in filthy conditions.

Prosecutors Timothy Hasson filed the documents while asking that Wahhaj be held without bail after he was arrested last week with four other adults facing child abuse charges.

Prosecutors did not bring up the school shooting accusation in court on Wednesday during an initial appearance by the abuse suspects.
[....]
Authorities said during the raid Friday that they had found the father armed with multiple firearms, including an assault rifle. They also said they believed there was a shooting range on the site.

The group arrived in Amalia in December, with enough money to buy groceries and construction supplies, according to Tyler Anderson, a 41-year-old auto mechanic who lives nearby.

He said he helped the newcomers install solar panels after they arrived but eventually stopped visiting.

Anderson said he met both of the men in the group, but never the women, who authorities have said are the mothers of the 11 children, ages 1 to 15.

Anderson did not recall seeing the Georgia boy who was missing. But he said some of the smaller children from the compound turned up to play with children at neighboring properties after the group first arrived.
[....]
As the months passed, however, they stopped seeing the smaller children playing in the area. They also stopped hearing guns fired off at a shooting range on the property, he said.

However, Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe indicated the body appeared to be that of a boy similar in age to Abdul-ghani, who suffers from seizures and was reported missing in December after his father said he was taking him to a park in Jonesboro, Georgia.

The father, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, had told his wife he wanted to perform an exorcism on the child, authorities said.

Sheriff Hogrefe, appearing to be fighting back tears, said: ‘We discovered the remains yesterday on Abdul’s fourth birthday.’
Body found on his 4th birthday. Asshole wanted to exorcise the baby's demons, the only demons I see are all the adults that let this happen to this baby and to all the other children.
