New scientific testing indicates where four people likely lived before their bodies were found in two steel drums in a state park in 1985 and 2000, investigators said Tuesday, marking a step forward in a case that has perplexed officials for 30 years.

Officials hope the information, combined with new lifelike digital images of the woman and three girls, will spur recognition in someone who knew them. Testing of the hair, teeth and bones shows the woman and two of the children, believed to be her daughters, likely lived in the Northeast. The third child, who is not maternally related, probably lived in the Dakotas or Nebraska.

"We are almost at the final line of what science can do to help us, based upon the remains, to identify where they came from," said Benjamin Agati, a senior assistant attorney general in New Hampshire. "At this point, it really is the public's help that we're looking for."

A hunter discovered the first two bodies, a woman and a girl believed to be 9 to 10, in a plastic bag spilling out of a steel drum in 1985 near a state park in Allenstown, New Hampshire. Fifteen years later, an investigator revisiting the case found a second steel drum containing the two other girls, one believed to be 2 to 3 and the other 3 to 4. Officials said Tuesday that the woman is likely the mother of the oldest and youngest children.

New data has narrowed the time of their killings to 1980 to 1984. The woman and oldest child show signs of blunt-force trauma, and investigators haven't released the cause of death for the two younger children.

Investigators said Tuesday they are nearly certain that all four victims were born in the United States. While testing shows the woman and two related children likely lived in the Northeast, it is possible that they lived in the upper Midwest or somewhere along the southern borders of Arizona, New Mexico and into the West Coast.

The middle child, in contrast, most likely spent her childhood further inland in the region near the Dakotas and western Nebraska. Testing also shows she could have lived in a few small pockets throughout the Northeast or in the Southwest.

Researchers tested the hair and teeth of the victims to determine where they lived based on water and food they consumed. The environmental conditions in different regions of the country can affect the chemical compounds in water.

Investigators believe all four victims were together in the Northeast sometime between the two weeks and three months leading up to their deaths.

Agati said investigators have received frequent tips on the case over the years but none have panned out. They plan to use the new information to better target areas where someone may have known the woman and girls.

"It's been frustrating, but it's not a case that's worth giving up on," Agati said. "We've learned more these last couple of months that have led to these results we're sharing today than we knew before."

Killer Drifter Tied to New Hampshire Murder Mysteries

A "chameleon" who died in prison while serving time for murdering his wife has now been tied to the 1981 disappearance of a New Hampshire woman and the bodies of a woman and three children — one of them his own daughter — who were found in barrels in the woods.

"We believe we have our killer," said New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Strelzin. "Now we need to identify and try to find all of his victims."

He said the suspect, known as Bob Evans and a slew of other aliases, "certainly fits the profile of a serial killer" and that investigators are concerned he may have murdered others they don't know about.

Investigators said they followed a convoluted forensic trail to tie the cases to Evans, a hard-drinking drifter who allegedly beat his victims to death and dismembered some of them. They believe he murdered girlfriend Denise Beaudin, a 23-year-old Manchester, New Hampshire, woman last seen in 1981. They suspect he killed her somewhere between New Hampshire and California and kept her infant daughter, named Dawn at birth, for several years before abandoning her in a California RV park in 1986. The girl, whom he renamed Lisa, was later adopted and is alive and well.

...
Police had long wondered if the Baudin case might be linked to the other big unsolved mystery in the area from the era. They compared Evans' DNA to the genetic profiles of the victims in the barrels and found he is the father of one of the dead girls. (The woman and the other two children are related to each other, possibly mother and child, but are not related to Evans).

Police also amassed circumstantial evidence linking Evans to the bodies. While employed as an electrician at a local mill, he had worked under the man who owned the property where the remains were dumped, and the barrels were likely from the mill.

Even though police believe they have figured out who is responsible for Beaudin's disappearance and the bodies in the barrels, they have many unanswered questions and asked that anyone with information about Evans contact them.

Because he changed his name and birth date so often, they are not even certain of his true identity, though they think he may have a military background. And they fear he may have more blood on his hands.

The 'bodies in the barrels' case has always been the big unsolved murder case up here in NH- especially bc it involves a mother & young children who were somehow never missed enough to be reported when they disappeared or identified after their bodies were found.

Although the case is considered solved, these victims have not received the justice they deserve: The probable murderer, Evans or whatever his name, died before he could be charged & with him went our best chance of ever identifying his victims.

Of the 4 barrel victims, all that we know is that the adult female was the mother of the oldest & youngest children, and that Evans himself was the father of the 3yo child.

These victims need to be remembered & deserve to have their names. I just hope it's not too late.

This story was also big news in New Brunswick, Canada as it unfolded years ago when I was younger. I am gobsmacked that people from the local area state that they had not heard of the finding of the 2nd drum, etc as I sure had and I'm in a different country. Even their eventual reconstructions and sketches were published in our local papers.

But, by all accounts, this isn't solved and is still wide-open; don't know what you mean by "solved". As in, "know who was responsible" for the killings - sure. But, solved it is not. Many investigations going on in quite a few states in attempts to determine just who this guy actually was, who the "found" victims are, if there are further victims and to try to answer the question, "where is Denise"? It's a very long way from solved.

I remember the found drums, what a despicable pos, they had a special on this recently showing how he killed the little children and everything about the case

I believe that has been in the making and now can be done

A woman and two girls whose bodies were found in steel drums dumped in a state park in Allenstown have been identified, investigators said Thursday, but the identity of a third girl is still unknown.

The bodies of the woman and three children were found in the woods of Bear Brook State Park in 1985 and 2000. Officials have said that the four were killed by Terry Peder Rasmussen, who was known as “Bob Evans” during his time in New Hampshire, but they were previously unable to identify them.

Associate Attorney General Jeffrey Strelzin said the woman has been identified as Marlyse Elizabeth Honeychurch, and two of the girls were identified as her daughters, Marie Elizabeth Vaughn and Sarah Lynn McWaters.

"Today, we've returned the identities and the dignity to Marlyse Honeychurch, Marie Vaughn and Sarah McWaters," said Senior Assistant Attorney General Susan Morrill.

Officials have used DNA to determine that Rasmussen was the father of the unidentified girl, but he was not related to the other two girls. The unidentified girl was also unrelated to the other victims.

Investigators laid out an elaborate timeline of the identified victims' activities that led to California in 1978, when they were at Honeychurch's mother's house around Thanksgiving.

"An argument ensued with her mother over a trivial matter," state police Sgt. Matthew Koehler said. "Marlyse left that event with her children and Terry Rasmussen and was never seen by her family again."

It was in 1980 that a woman using the name "Elizabeth Evans" surfaced at a residence tied to Rasmussen, who was using the alias "Bob Evans," according to Manchester police.

Honeychurch's middle name is Elizabeth, and investigators said they wonder if she was with Rasmussen at the time and using his assumed name. But they don't know for sure.

Rasmussen died in 2010 while in prison for killing his common law wife,

Eunsoon Jun, in California. He has been tied to at least five killings and is suspected in at least two more

I’ve been following this case for years, ever since I learned about the little girl he abandoned in California. I’m so glad they finally have a name. Pretty sure the mother of the 3rd girl is also dead.

Officials have released an updated digital facial reconstruction for an unidentified girl whose decomposed body was found in a barrel near a New Hampshire state park years ago.

The girl was one of four victims found in two barrels near Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown in 1985 and 2000. Three of them were identified last year as Marlyse Elizabeth Honeychurch and her two children, Marie Elizabeth Vaughn and Sarah Lynn McWaters. The unidentified girl isn't believed to be related to them.

The investigation suggests that the unidentified girl was not from New Hampshire, but most likely from Texas, Arizona, California or Oregon.
Through ongoing genealogy work, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says the child is primarily Caucasian with a small amount of Asian, black and American Indian ancestry. She was 2 to 4 years old at the time of her death, placing her birthdate between 1975-1977. She had slightly wavy brown hair and stood as tall as 3 feet, 9 inches. She had a slight overbite.

Authorities believe Terry Peder Rasmussen was responsible for all four deaths and that the unidentified body is his daughter's. He went by many aliases, including "Bob Evans."

Rasmussen, who is suspected of killing at least six women and two children, died in a California prison in 2010.
