The shooting allegedly occurred after Green was involved in a traffic incident with the children's father, Craig Allen Sheff, in the Flat Rock community of Mount Airy.

Sheff drove the children to the hospital, where the boy was treated and released, and the girl was reportedly in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Green has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, discharging a weapon into an occupied property causing bodily injury and assault by pointing a gun, according to Surry County authorities."

- A Mount Airy man was sentenced to 78-98 years in prison for shooting two children in a road rage incident in 2019, according to the Surry County Sheriff's Office.

Byron Donnell Green, 42, was found guilty of multiple felony charges.

The charges are: two counts of attempted murder; two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill; and one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied property causing serious bodily injury.

Green was sentenced to a minimum of 78 years to a maximum of 98 years in prison by Superior Court Judge Angela Puckett.

Sheff and his girlfriend had just picked up his 9-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter on April 20, 2019. Green was in a Ford Escape and used it to block the road in front of Sheff. Sheff told Green to move his vehicle and added that he had his children with him, believing that would help to de-escalate the situation.

As Sheff drove past, Green stepped out of his vehicle with a gun and fired several shots at Sheff's Nissan Sentra. Green then jumped back into his car and pursued Sheff.

Green caught up to Sheff and drove his vehicle into the opposite lane against oncoming traffic and pulled beside Sheff’s Sentra, then shot into the rear passenger side of the Sentra.

The bullet shattered the rear window glass and hit Sheff’s young daughter. The same bullet then hit Sheff’s young son, deputies say.

Green passed vehicles in the opposite lane to escape, and Sheff drove his critically injured children straight to Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy. The children were later released from the hospital and were in the courtroom to hear Green's verdict and sentencing.
