A 44-year-old woman and her two 9-year-old twin daughters are dead after the woman intentionally drove a vehicle into the Kalamazoo River Monday night, according to Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Karianne Thomas.
Police confirmed the three deaths on the morning of Tuesday, June 18.
Two other young females, younger than 10, had been in the car, and were let out before it went into the river, Thomas said. With the help of family members, the girls made contact with police 11 p.m. June 17, Thomas said, and they acknowledged the car went into the river.
Police made contact with the two girls at Walgreens, at Riverview Drive and Gull Road, police said.
“They were young girls, so that information was pieced together with the help of family members and officers on the scene,” Thomas said.
She called the incident a tragedy, and said the investigation continues.
Police believe the female intentionally drove into the river with the two children inside, Thomas said.
