A man has been convicted in the beating death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter.
Isaac Paul Ortiz, 22, was sentenced to 32 years in the Department of Corrections and 5 years mandatory parole, he will be eligible for parole after 24 years.
Ortiz told investigators he hit 2yr old Lyla Blackwood on the head with his knuckles after getting angry
Ortiz called authorities and told them the girl was not breathing. She was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The child's death was ruled homicide from blunt force injuries to the head and neck.
Ortiz told investigators he didn't think he hit Lyla very hard and he never meant to hurt her.
Judge Thomas Deister, recommended a number of services for Ortiz, including: anger management, a mental health evaluation, a class for cognitive restructuring and, "the thing Mr. Ortiz needs the most, which is a parenting class."
