A Missouri woman has been sentenced to nine years in prison in a DWI crash that killed her 5-year-old daughter after prosecutors said she admitted to drinking two bottles of wine in about 3 1/2 hours.

Prosecutors said before leaving a party, Samantha Jones, 32, posted photos of full wine glasses and a photo with her daughter on social media with the hashtag, #momsneeddrinks.

Jones was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty in May to driving while intoxicated, resulting in her daughter’s death.

Officials said she left Camden Point, Missouri, around 9 p.m. on June 18, 2018, and lost control of her car on East Highway near Skinner Lake Road.

The rear passenger side door hit a telephone pole, breaking the pole into two pieces.

Jones' daughter, Macklyn Lucas, was sitting in the rear passenger seat at the time of the crash. She suffered a traumatic head injury and died less than three days later at an area hospital.

Jones' blood alcohol level was 0.186 roughly two hours after the crash, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, police said.

During his sentencing argument, Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd commented on the social media posts, saying her priorities were not in order.

"Moms need to put their kids first. Moms need to protect their children. Moms need to obey the law,” Zahnd said. “Moms must not get behind the wheel of a car after they’ve had drinks.”

He said he did not doubt that Jones was anguished by the death of her daughter, but he stressed her crime deserved prison time.

.Several people supporting Jones attended the hearing. Her attorney asked the court to give Jones probation, arguing that knowing she killed her daughter would be punishment enough.

Feeling bad about something should never release you from punishment.
