A 26-year-old woman has pleaded guilty in connection with the 2017 death of her 1-year-old son.

Police said the boy died of blunt force trauma.

Chanel Green faces up to five years in prison when she is sentenced in the death of her toddler, Antonio Hughes Jr.

The boy's father, 26-year-old Antonio Hughes, was indicted last week in connection with the boy's death and remains in prison awaiting trial.

Delaware State Police began their investigation on April 30, 2017, after being dispatched to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in reference to the death of a child.

Investigators said the boy was being cared for by Hughes when the child experienced a medical emergency. Green was at work when Hughes contacted her and told her to return to their home.

Soon after she returned home, she and Hughes took their son to the hospital, where the boy died, according to Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe, a state police spokeswoman.

About this time, Jaffe said investigators learned Hughes was not supposed to have contact with the child.

In 2016, Hughes was convicted of second-degree child abuse involving the same child. As a result, a no-contact order was issued. But after his release from prison, Green allowed him to return to her home, knowing it was in violation of the court order.

In addition to the no-contact order with the child, there also was an order that there be no contact between Hughes and Green.

The parents were arrested this spring after state police determined the boy died as a result of blunt force trauma associated with child abuse.

Green pleaded guilty on July 23 to one count of endangering the welfare of a child, at which point prosecutors dropped a charge of criminally negligent homicide.
