A woman from Milford, Massachusetts is facing criminal charges after she crashed her vehicle into a Rhode Island reservoir with her three young children inside, police say.
Capt. Howard Tigh, of the Portsmouth Fire Department, said he had never seen a vehicle end up in the Lawton Valley Reservoir in his nearly two decades on the job.
"It's a pretty unique situation (with it) being a reservoir where public access is cut off on most sides," Tigh said. "We never really, from our end, determined how the car got there to begin with."
At around 3 p.m. Saturday, Portsmouth police were called to the reservoir for a report of a vehicle that was submerged in the water.
Upon arrival, police determined that 30-year-old Amanda Nappi was driving a 2007 Toyota Highlander and had driven onto the reservoir embankment.
Nappi and her three children were taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
"Obviously, (the children) were very frightened and scared," Tigh said.
The children were later turned over to the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families with the assistance of the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families.
After her release from the hospital, the 30-year-old was arrested on three counts of cruelty to or neglect of a child.
