Two men are said to have confessed to strangling a Brazilian model who vanished from her Los Angeles home last month, before driving to 1,300 miles to Oklahoma to ditch her car.

The suspects, named as Thiago Philipe Souza Bragança and Walderson Junior da Silva, allegedly used a power cord to kill Ana Braga, 24, G1 reports.

Thiago is said to have told police he and da Silva were high on drugs at the time of the killing but that they were defending from themselves from Ana, who had a knife.

The two men, arrested Saturday in Brazil, are then said to have filming a chilling video mocking their victim after hiding her body into a comforter.

Surveillance footage shows the accused going into Braga's LA home with the aspiring model before leaving again a few hours later with the comforter, according to reports.

California investigators revealed on Saturday they found a video believed to be of Braga's bloodied body. Authorities said that a car registered in her name was found abandoned 1,000 miles away in Oklahoma.

Police in California had said they have surveillance footage showing the bloody body of a woman lying face down with a belt and electric cord wrapped around her neck.

The woman's body has yet to be recovered but the victim filmed in the surveillance video is feared to be Braga.

The Public Ministry of the State of Espírito Santo (MPES) obtained the conviction of the Capixabas Thiago Philipe Souza Bragança and Wenderson Junior da Silva, confessed murderers of the miner Ana Paula Feitosa, killed in Los Angeles, in the United States. The case, unheard of in Brazil, draws attention to the fact that the crime was committed in another country (extraterritoriality) and the arrest and trial occurred in Brazil. The trial, held at the Victoria Criminal Forum, lasted more than 17 hours.
At the end of the Jury Court, Thiago Philipe Souza Bragança had a total sentence of 37 years and 3 months, while Wenderson Junior Dalbem Silva was sentenced to 37 years, 7 months and 15 days of imprisonment.
They were convicted of the crimes of homicide with three qualifiers (for futile reasons, use of cruel means, practiced through a resource that made it impossible to defend the victim); for concealment of a corpse; and theft of the car, cell phone and money of the victim, with two qualifiers (abuse of trust and contest of people).
The two were convicted of choking the 24-year-old model on January 30, 2020, at her home in Los Angeles, and throwing her body into a trash container in the city of Desert Hot Spring, California. At the time, the two managed to flee through Mexico and returned to Brazil. The pair were arrested in Cariacica on February 22, 2020.
The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police (LADP), which pointed out that the criminals killed the strangled young woman with a belt and with a power wire. Then they wrapped the body in a mattress and put it in the trunk of the victim's car.

Subsequently, the Brazilian Federal Police acted providentially, mainly on the part of international cooperation, through the Judicial-Penal Assistance Agreement signed between Brazil and the United States, the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT). The Civil Police and the Capixabas Military Police also contributed greatly in the context of the criminals' arrests.

The court and investigators established several interconnected factors behind the murder: [1]
  • Robbery (Larceny): According to investigations highlighted by CNN Brasil and the court records, the primary economic motive was to steal her belongings. Ana Paula worked as a delivery and rideshare driver, and she owned expensive watches, jewelry, and cash. After strangling her, the men immediately stole her money, credit cards, cell phone, and her car, using her assets and vehicle to finance their multi-state escape down to Mexico.
  • Co-habitation Disputes: The two men were friends of Ana Paula who had recently moved to Los Angeles from the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. She had rented out a room in her apartment to them. Tensions and arguments arose during their time living together.
  • Drug Influence: Upon their arrest by the Brazilian Federal Police, the defendants confessed to the killing and claimed they were heavily under the influence of drugs at the time of the crime. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
During the trial, the prosecutors successfully argued that the crime was committed for a base motive (motivo torpe)—meaning it was a قتل motivated by greed and extreme coldness—which directly contributed to their severe 37-year prison sentences.
