MONCKS CORNER — Matthew Jason Litchfield Jr. was about to attend a church service Wednesday night when Berkeley County deputies nabbed him in the parking lot and locked cuffs on his wrists.

Twenty minutes earlier, deputies stopped and arrested Litchfield's two housemates as they drove toward a Moncks Corner home where Litchfield's pregnant wife was living with her boyfriend. A 12-gauge shotgun was in the pickup truck.

Sheriff Wayne DeWitt said the men were carrying out a plot to kill Litchfield's wife, her unborn baby and her boyfriend in return for a considerable amount of money from Litchfield when the deed was done.

Warrants say he told them where they lived, when to kill them and how to kill them.

A day later, Litchfield, 27, of 132 White Pine Court, sat in court charged with three counts each of soliciting to commit murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the plot to kill his wife of nine years, Elana.

He is being held without bond in the Berkeley County detention center after waiving his right to a bond hearing.

Co-defendants James O'Conner, 33, and Martin Wayne Poston, 30, are both charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit murder. Berkeley County Magistrate Ava Ayers set their bond at $1.5 million each.

History
When deputies arrested Litchfield on Wednesday night, he was wearing an ankle bracelet as a condition of his bond from a May 2007 arrest on charges of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and lewd act upon a child under 16. He was released on a $150,000 bond.

He was arrested again in July, accused of grabbing his wife by the neck and choking her while armed with a knife. He was released on a $25,000 bond in that incident.

"It didn't matter what he do, he got out on bond," Floyd Clark said.
