A 34-year-old Maryland man was arrested after police said he knowingly transferred HIV to women he met on various dating websites and apps.

Frederick County police arrested Rudolph Smith after obtaining evidence during a 21-month investigation that he was actively having sex with women knowing he was HIV positive.

Detectives identified and contacted several of the victims and received several search and seizure warrants against Smith.

Smith was indicted by a grand jury on the following charges:

  • 4 counts: First-degree assault - First Degree
  • 4 counts: Reckless endangerment
  • 4 counts: Knowing transfer of HIV prohibited.

37-year-old Rudolph Jericho Smith entered an Alford plea to three counts of Second Degree Assault and three counts of Knowingly Attempting to Transfer HIV.

Rudolph Smith will continue to be held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center without bond until sentencing November 4th.

A total of seven women have been identified as victims.
 
Rudolph Jericho Smith was sentenced to 30 years, suspending all but nine years and, upon his release, he’s ordered to serve five years of probation. He entered an Alford plea to three counts of second degree assault and three counts of knowingly attempted to transfer HIV on September 13.
