Lewis County Sheriff David Parrish said Tuesday that Marcus A. Mays, 34, was formally charged this week with abuse or neglect of a child.
Parrish said Mays allegedly caused the child "to suffer serious physical injury to the head" by striking the child numerous times with his hand.
The child was taken Friday to Blessing Hospital in Quincy and listed in critical condition.
A multijurisdictional police investigation into possible child abuse was launched after the LaGrange Police Department received information that a child was taken to the hospital with severe injuries.
The investigation led authorities to Mays.
A search warrant was issued by the Associate Circuit Court in Lewis County, and a search of Mays' residence -- a trailer in LaGrange -- was conducted. Parrish said several items were found related to a possible charge of endangering the welfare of a child, a Class D felony.
