This is such an odd story...but I found it interesting.

A man who believed he had killed his wife and his daughter in a drunken rage spent over 20 years living wild in a forest to evade a murder charge.

But Nikolai Gromov, hadn’t actually killed anyone and his self-imposed forest exile among wolves, tigers and bears was completely unnecessary.

Gromov, now aged 72, even lost a leg as a result of living in a remote hut in the desolate Russian Taiga region.

Gromov’s incredible story began when as a young man he quit his job as a lumberjack and joined the Russian army. That led to a job as a guard in a penal colony and he eventually became a prison governor.

Gromov had married while he was in the army, and he and wife Lyubov Petrovna welcomed a son in 1970 and a daughter in 1975.

But things began to unravel for him when he fell for a female inmate at the prison colony, and feeling unable to live without her, helped her to escape in May 1980. Gromov and his fugitive girlfriend thought they would be safe after finding an abandoned hut in the forest some 40 kilometres from the jail.

But they were arrested, and he was jailed for 12 years. While he was inside, his marriage broke up, and his jailbird lover vanished.

Outside, he briefly had an affair with another woman in Taishet, who dumped him with a baby daughter after realising she had become pregnant.

With no job and nowhere else to go, Gromov returned eventually to his ex-wife Lyubov Petrovna in Siberia. She opened the door to find him standing there with his daughter in his arms and after he begged her to take him back, and to help him care for his new daughter Elena, she agreed.

For a short while they were happy, but the brief honeymoon period did not last very long. Gromov began drinking and became abusive.
