Coast Guard watchstanders got the call just before 4 p.m. from Crater Lake National Park Service rangers requesting helicopter support for an injured man who fell into Crater Lake’s caldera near Rims Village.

The aircrew arrived at the scene at about 4:30 p.m. The District 3 Technical Rope Rescue Team was already 600 feet down into the caldera and reported hearing a man yelling from further down the caldera.

The aircrew hoisted the injured man out of the caldera and transferred him to the AirLink helicopter crew. He was then transported to a hospital in Bend.

The man’s condition is unknown at this time.

Last month, Crater Lake officials said the rocks and snow near the edge of the caldera were unstable and can give way without warning.
