A Perth baker accused of murdering his six-month-old daughter by shaking her and throwing her onto the floor 'just snapped' because he was sleep-deprived and the teething child was restless and agitated, a trial has heard.

Isabella Sully Jean Martin's mother was working as a McDonald's manager during the day, leaving Arron Colin Martin to care for their infant at their home after he returned from early morning shifts in November 2017.

Martin's defence counsel John Rando told the Supreme Court of Western Australia on Monday his client did not intend to harm the child but 'something just happened' when she would not sleep, as he'd hoped.

'You can begin to understand the dilemma here,' Mr Rando said.

'They did the best they could. They loved the child but something was bound to happen.'

Martin was traumatised after he realised what he'd done and twice tried to end his own life before turning himself in to police, Mr Rando said.

Paramedics gave first aid to the severely injured baby at the house, then rushed her to hospital, where she died.

I mean.... she takes care of the kid at night, when the baby is asleep. He works all night, then has to deal with an awake baby all day.

Not justifiable, but that lack of sleep really could drive someone fucking nuts.

A Perth man has been found guilty of murdering his six-month-old daughter by shaking her and throwing her onto the floor.

McDonald's manager Nicole Martin had been tag-teaming care of Isabella Sully Jean Martin with her baker husband Arron Colin Martin for less than two months in November 2017 when their child died from injuries he inflicted after returning to their Brookdale house from an early morning shift.

Martin, 37, told his Supreme Court of Western Australia trial this week he 'just snapped' because he was sleep-deprived and the baby wouldn't settle.

Mr Rando told the jury his client did not intend to kill his baby and they could find he committed the lesser charge of manslaughter, but Martin was convicted of murder on Wednesday.

They sleep though too. A lot more than during the day. Working all night then caring for a baby all day?
Why not daycare? It's subsidised in Australia? How could the mother think this could work?
What do you mean how could the mother think this would work? Are you kidding me? She didn’t murder the baby! The dumb ass father obviously knew his work schedule bf they had this baby. If he was “losing” it he should have taken steps to fix it. And I call bullshit on getting no sleep being the cause. Do you think single moms who work 3rd shift pay for daycare when they’re at work and then again when they get off so they can sleep-No. And why couldn’t he sleep a) when the baby napped b) when mom got home before he went to work c) his days off d) on his wife’s days off...pathetic excuse. Bet it’ll be nice and quiet in prison for nice long cozy naps.

Day care is expensive. It may have not been in their budget. Why are you blaming the Mom she didn’t do anything wrong. If Dad was struggling he should have said something.
