Shawn Wesley Averett has been charged with aggravated child abuse and sexual abuse using an inanimate object... Described though as sexual torture

A toddler is fighting for his life after he was reportedly physically and sexually abused in Chilton County last week.

The 16-month-old was severely injured and is in critical condition, with swelling and bleeding to his brain, according to a statement released by his mother on GoFundMe. “They have him in a medically induced coma for the moment, but they said that when the pressure and swelling subside they will take everything off and let him wake up on his own,’’ Katie Elliott wrote. “He has tubes and wires running from his little head to his toes.”

Jemison police this week announced they had arrested 33-year-old Shaw Wesley Averett in connection with the boy’s injuries.

The boy suffered severe head trauma, as well as genital and anal tearing. Averett had been in a relationship with the boy’s mother.

His attorney, John Robbins, said Averett denies the allegations.

“The police and the public at large are jumping to conclusions without knowing all the facts,’’ said John Robbins, Averett’s attorney. “Shawn denies that he ever hurt (the child) and that he did not cause his injuries.’’

Averett was arrested July 18 on the felony charges of aggravated child abuse and sexual torture. The warrants and other charging documents against Averett have not been uploaded to the online court system but authorities tell AL.com the boy suffered severe head trauma, as well as genital and anal tearing. Averett had been in a relationship with the boy’s mother.

Averett, who lives in the Shelby County town of Shelby, was released from the Chilton County Jail on July 19 after posting $90,000 bond. He has a court date set for Aug. 15.

I'm surprised child rapist Averett made bond.

She still has pics of him and the baby up. and doesnt say a word about him, like not an angry 'I hate you for what you did' or anything.

whats the bet she believes hes innocent?

And she knew that baby was being hurt, or she even participated. The pictures she posted of the baby he has bruises and scratches all over his face, and not one commenter noticed it or cared to ask WHY he had those marks. They are both fucked in the head.

A Chilton County jury has found a man not guilty of aggravated child abuse and sexual torture of a child.
Jemison Police charged Shawn Wesley Averett in July of 2019.

Court documents show a jury trial started April 12, 2022 and ended on April 14, 2022. Jurors returned verdicts of not guilty of Aggravated Child Abuse and not guilty of Sexual Torture as charged in the 2-count indictment.

“From day one, Shawn said he did not hurt (the boy). He was consistent throughout this case that he did not cause the injuries to (the boy),’’Averett’s attorney, John Robbins said. “He told the jury the same thing that he told the police on the day (the boy) went to the hospital.”

“He said that he was innocent when he was arrested, and he told that to the jury on Thursday,’’ the attorney said. “Sometimes when a man’s life and freedom are on the line, all he has is his word.”

“That is a scary position to be in, but that is what Shawn had,’’ Robbins said. “He had his word. He will be forever thankful that the jury believed his word. And sometimes a man’s word can lead to truth and justice.”

Robbins said he and his client’s continue to offer prayers for the boy.

“We wish him the very best. He did not deserve to be hurt,’’ he said. “Our hope is that someone will look at the right person who is responsible for hurting (the boy). I think that the jurors believe they know who that person is, and we will leave it at that.”
