a man shot and killed himself in a South Carolina home after his 2-year-old son accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun.

Richland County Corner Gary Watts said both father and son died in the shooting Wednesday at a Columbia home.

Watts says 2-year-old Kyree Myers’ mother called 911 after her son found the loaded gun and shot himself.

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook says when officers arrived, 38-year-old Keon Myers had a gun and was threatening to kill himself, firing the fatal shot into his head after refusing to drop the weapon.

“Our hearts are heavy at the tremendous loss of life," Holbrook told WIS. "We have victim advocates assigned to the case to assist the family during this difficult time. This experience has also been emotionally trying for responding officers. They will participate in a debriefing to discuss the incident and receive further support as needed.”

Police say they are still investigating if the father and son were killed with the same weapon and whether that gun was bought legally.

At this point, what does all that matter? They saw him kill himself, so they know it wasn't murder. And to whether or not the gun was purchased legally, there's about a 99% chance he is the one who bought it and he's dead, so what does it matter? Let the mother grieve.

Due diligence. Police are duty bound to find if it was purchased illegally and trace the sale. It may not get very far, but tracing it may produce other evidence, such as crimes committed with the gun.
So they can't ignore it because it was involved in a preventable tragedy.

Here's a guy who truly loved his kid. You can tell in most these stories the criminals or mere failed parents are selfish and dont genuinely give TOO much of a shit. If you are destroyed by guilt and sadness, this IS the only end result. A person who does anything different doesnt care that much. Fact.

Dad did the right thing.
All he really needed to do was invest in and use a trigger lock.
Dope.
