Justin Drinkard, 33, is facing charges after deputies say he beat a man with a baseball bat, causing his death.
Deputies responded to a call of a fight between two men when authorities arrived at the home they found Jerry Benefield, Jr., 20, unresponsive.
EMS rushed Benefield to a local hospital. He was was then taken to a hospital in Fort Walton Beach, where he died from his injuries on Monday around noon.
Deputies say after interviewing witnesses, they believe Drinkard went to Benefield's house to buy drugs sometime before 3 a.m. Sunday. They say while there, the men used drugs together.
According to the victim's girlfriend, Drinkard began making sexual advances towards her and Benefield. Deputies say that's when the girlfriend and Benefield asked a roommate to help get Drinkard out of the home.
Deputies believe after confronting Drinkard in a bedroom, Benefield and the roommate turned to lead Drinkard to the front door. They believe Drinkard instead followed Benefield's girlfriend, a minor, into the bathroom. Deputies say Drinkard began groping Benefield's girlfriend and she screamed for help.
They believe Benefield ran to defend his girlfriend and got into a fight with Drinkard while the roommate called 911. They believe when it appeared Drinkard was winning the fight, Benefield's girlfriend grabbed a frying pan and hit Drinkard twice, hard enough to damage the frying pan, but Drinkard didn't stop.
They believe Benefield passed out during the fight. They say Drinkard grabbed a baseball bat Benefield had been holding and hit him in the head with it an unknown amount of times. At this time, the girlfriend ran to a neighbor's home to call 911.
