Charges against a man have been upgraded to murder after police say his girlfriend’s toddler son died days after a severe beating.

Hassan Rashad was arrested and charged in the beating of the 2-year-old Adrian Mitchell Jr., who later died at a hospital.

Floyd County police say they responded to the duplex apartment on April 13 on a call of an unresponsive child.

During their investigation, police learned the 2-year-old and another 5-year-old were in Rashad’s care when the toddler was severely injured.

Doctors say little Adrian suffered multiple internal injuries.

Relatives told Channel 2’s Tom Regan that Adrian was temporarily removed from the home by the Department of Family and Children’s Services last fall, but officials would not confirm that information.
Floyd County Police arrested 28-year-old Sydney Dean and charged her with child cruelty and second-degree felony murder in the death of her own son, 2-year-old Adrian Mitchell, Junior.

"It's not that we think she assaulted the child, but we believe she could have done more to help the child get the medical attention he needed," said Floyd County Police spokesman Jerome Poole.

The arrest comes more than a week after her boyfriend, 38-year-old Hasan Rashad, was charged with felony murder. Investigators said Mitchell was savagely beaten by Rashad.

Investigators said he was supposed to be caring for the toddler in the couple's home while his mother was at work. According to Rashad's arrest warrant, Adrian's 6-year-old sister witnessed the brutal assault.

The child had several broken bones and bruises and other internal injuries. Some of the injuries appeared to be fresh and others appear to be from previous incidents," Poole told FOX 5's Portia Bruner.

Floyd County Police said after Rashad's arrest, investigators concluded Dean could have done more to save her child. According to Dean's arrest warrants, the 28-year-old mother knew her son needed medical attention for several hours, but waited until Adrian was unresponsive to get him the help he needed.

Prosecutors continued to build their case against a man accused of the 2018 beating death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

The trial of Hassan Rashad began Monday and continued through an early recess on Friday.

Since the beginning of testimony, Rome Circuit Assistant District Attorneys Emily Johnson and Mary Beth Gregoire have worked to establish a timeline of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The state is expected to wrap up its portion of the case Monday.

Rashad, 42, was arrested on April 13, 2018, on murder and cruelty to children charges. He has remained in jail ever since. At the time of his arrest, Rashad was on probation from a 2015 aggravated assault conviction in Clayton County.
A series of medical examiners testified that two-year-old Adrian suffered brain injuries and a fractured skull along with multiple internal injuries, including a lacerated liver and damaged left lung.

The child’s mother, Sydney Dean initially told police she was at home the night the child was injured and the injuries stemmed from an accident involving a TV. An investigation later found she had been at work and was aware of the injuries involving the child.

She called 911 when she arrived home the next morning and the child was unresponsive. Medical examiners found bruising all over Adrian’s body in various stages of healing.
Dean has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years to serve eight years in prison. Prosecutors dropped two felony cruelty to children charges as part of that plea.
