Investigators say the man found the mutilated body beneath a bloody tarp.

Jared Chance, 29, the second-floor tenant, was charged after a search of his apartment allegedly turned up additional body parts and other evidence, including items police say could have been used to dismember a corpse.

Chance faces charges of mutilation of a body and concealing the death of an individual.

The remains have not yet been identified, but Grand Rapids police say they have been in contact with the family of Ashley Regina-Marie Young, a missing 32-year-old woman.

Police say Chance was an acquaintance of the missing woman, but they did not connect him to her disappearance.

Chance is being held on $750,000 bail. He has yet to enter pleas to the charges, and it was unclear Friday who his lawyer is.

A Michigan man has been charged with murdering and dismembering a 31-year-old woman, whose butchered remains were found at the suspect's home a month ago.

Jared Chance, 29, was originally charged with mutilation of a dead body and concealing the death of a person, after police found the remains of 31-year-old Ashley Young outside the suspect's second-floor apartment in Grand Rapids.

The woman's torso was discovered by a neighbor in the basement of the rental house

Young, from Oshtemo Township, had traveled to Grand Rapids and was last seen alive on November 29 at Mulligan’s Pub, allegedly in Chance's company.

On Tuesday, Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker charged Chance with additional counts of open murder and tampering with evidence in connection to Young's death.

Investigators have not released Young's cause and manner of death, and they have not commented on a possible motive behind the killing.

The exact nature of the relationship between Young and Chance is unclear, but the two were friends on Facebook.

Chance's father, retired Illinois police sergeant James Chance, and his mother, Barbara Chance, were both charged last month with accessory after the fact to the mutilation charge and lying to police. They have denied any wrongdoing.

A jury found Jared Chance guilty of second-degree murder, mutilation and concealing the body of Ashley Young.
Judge Mark Trusock sentenced him to a minimum of 100 years to a maximum 200 years in prison. He won’t be eligible for parole until he’s 130 years old.

"You sir in my mind are a very evil individual. You are clearly a monster without any conscience whatsoever and you are someone who is a danger to society and should never be allowed free," Trusock said.
Young was last seen alive at a Grand Rapids bar with Chance the night of Nov. 29, 2018. According to police, two days later, Chance’s neighbor discovered a body in the basement of their home.

Still to this day, her head and limbs have not been found.

A retired police officer accused of helping his son after the death and dismemberment of a Kalamazoo-area woman was convicted Monday of acting as an accessory.

The Kent County jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision on one of two perjury charge against James Chance. However, the jury acquitted him on another perjury charge.

The results of the trial emerged a few hours after a judge told struggling jurors to keep working toward a verdict.
