Jamie Himes, 29, and Jason Crawford, 35, were each charged with this week with nine felony endangerment counts regarding an incident on October 19.

Police said they were called to a home in the 300 block of Spruce Street after other family members discovered the children, ages 1 to 10, had been left alone.

The children were filthy and unkept. All had severe cases of lice and had to have their heads shaved to treat the infestation. One child had to be hospitalized for two days for a severe case of diaper rash, Steelton police wrote in the criminal complaint.

It was also determined that some of the children were not attending school on a regular basis and had numerous unexcused absences, police said.

The children were taken into protective custody.

The home was cold, had "dog and human feces strewn about," and a downstairs toilet was not working and filled with feces. The sink "had a form of gelatin in it and bugs in the gelatin" were flying about, the complaint states.

The borough codes office condemned the home. Police said there was a hole in the roof and black mold was growing in one of the bedrooms.

Himes was already awaiting trial on seven felony counts of child endangerment regarding a similar incident at the home on May 1.

Police said Himes has 10 children. Three lived with their father when the initial charges were filed in May.

Himes told investigators that she was trying to take care of her children by herself and that it was very overwhelming, the complaint states.
